In short: Great PB potential but lacking a certain character In full: The reality of road races for me is that if you want fast and flat, you don't get scenery. Especially if the race starts at an inland naval base.
Enjoyed this though, and made the PB which I was expecting. Good marshalling, good organisation.
Could have used another water station though, and it wasn't obvious where the start was.
Overall it's a race for PB's, not for scenery and because of the location lacked a certain something.
Shall do it next year though. Date of review: April 8, 2010
In short: A small but fun event, great scenery but just too little flat terrain In full: First time for this race today and despite a very cold morning I enjoyed it.
The scenery was excellent, the marshalling very good, and it was very friendly overall.
Negatives? Well it's not their fault but I'd say at least 60% of the course is either running uphill or downhill, so no chance of a PB. Also, as you're at the lowest point at the 5k mark, you know it's going to get tougher.
I'd like to see 'proper' race numbers too. I'm sure I'm not the only person who collects these.
Shall do it again though, and well done to the organisers. Date of review: March 7, 2010
In short: Excellent organisation, very good value, tough hills. In full: Really enjoyed this event and the long-sleeved T-shirt reward will certainly see some wear.
Excellent marshalling, good PA, good atmosphere and the inclusion of the 5k was a nice touch. It meant my wife could have a run too.
The negatives? Well personally I found the hills made this one tough race, and the downhill bits are included there. Those descents really took their toll and the one before the Humdinger Hill ruined any chance I had of getting up it.
You can't blame the organisers for the hills and it's not as if you don't know about them.
The jelly babies at 4 miles were great, though another water station wouldn't have gone amiss.
All in all though, this is a great event. A 9/10 job and I'll be there next year. Date of review: February 21, 2010
In short: Very tough for average joes and a race you might only wish to do once. In full: Ran this for the first time today, and yes, the scenery is the big attraction. The course however is pretty hardcore, with hills that anyone but the very best has to walk up.
It made a change from road running for sure, and of course, once you've finised you're glad you ran.
I agree that there were not enough marshalls, it's a dangerous course, and I would have like to see a race clock at the finish line.
Shame the finish couldn't be down the approach road to the castle, but I guess it's because people are leaving via that route.
Car parking could have been better organised, as lots of people parked further away that they needed to.
Overall, I'm glad I did it, but had the weather been not quite perfect I might not be feeling the same way. Date of review: November 15, 2009
In short: Good fun and well supported In full: I enjoyed this more than I thought I was going to. The weather was foul early doors but OK for the race. Would have been very scenic with a bit of sunshine.
A very hilly race though, very few flat sections and it always felt as though I was running uphill or into a strong wind.
Managed a good time (for me) of 51:45 which makes me think I'll have no trouble breaking the 50:00 mark on a flat course.
I probably enjoyed the Langport race a little more than this one, but I shall certainly be running this event again next year. Date of review: November 1, 2009
