In short: Hills. lovely down hills. In full: You run a course in the shape of a hog. You need more reasons? Big paths, fun atmosphere. Some challenging ups but some fast downs. I highly recommend it. Date of review: December 9, 2014
In short: Hard Hills. Painful downhills. Great fun In full: Great race. My third Hurt and they never fail to do literally that. Friendly helpful marshals, great atmosphere and an incredibly challenging run.
Sadly, looking through the reviews it seems someone had a bad race and is flaming it for absolutely no reason. Personally I think it is a great race. Having the ability to follow illuminous signs with arrows is quite normal in races so I managed to do the 12k without getting lost.
In short: Muddy Mess Makes Meek Men Macho In full: There is no chance of a PB. Unless you take your Brutal Series and attempt to beat a previous time. Therefore there is every possibility to get a PB.
With the Brutal series you get something you dont get elsewhere with these offroad. A couple of hundred runners of all varieties ranging from "How the hell do they do that" to the "Lets just go get muddy and have fun" meeting up and creating a great atmosphere. You dont get that with the bigger offroad runs nor the normal road runs.
You WILL get muddy. You WILL get wet. You WILL have 4 showers before you feel clean. But most of all, you WILL go to work and talk about it. People will think you are insane and wonder why...until they do it. And then it all makes sense.
The organisers run it like clockwork and the marshalls with their smiles and chat will make you pass with a smile.
Bordon was the messiest Brutal I have done to date...and I cannot think of any other thing I could have done on Saturday morning which would be more fun.
Now stop reading this, go to brutalrun.co.uk and go to dates. Then damn well enter one. Date of review: November 18, 2012
In short: Muddy Boggy Race seeks Shower In full: There was mud. There was water. There was more mud. More water. Hang on, whats that? More mud you say? Oh look. A hill! AND MUD AND WATER! Fell over about 50 times. Whacked my head on a tree during one fall. Helped people out of the "water features" when it was too slippery. Picked up people who fell in front of me and laughed about it as we carried on. Got mud and sand in places that I feel will only be found during a medical deep exploration of an orrifice at some point. My clothes were pretty much ruined...or at least my washing machine is now. There are no negatives. The Brutal series are a must for anyone fancying getting away from the concrete jungle or safety of the local park where you might have to dodge a puddle. If you are tempted but aren't sure, go look up the next race and DO IT. Doing these races make you look more attractive to the opposite sex.
Disclaimer: Doing these races will NOT result in you being more attractive to the opposite sex...but you will have a blast. Date of review: October 22, 2012
In short: Hurts like a swift kick in the knackers In full: Having done the July Hurt and spending a few days wondering if my legs would return, I wandered in to the September Hurt with some trepidation...especially as they had changed the course. And wow, they changed the course! Punishing uphill sections with the reprieve coming from the punishing knee crunching downhill sections makes it an incredibly hard yet incredibly rewarding run. This will be a regular on my calendar for future years. Date of review: October 3, 2012
In short: Has the 4 special ingredients: Wet. Muddy. Hard. Fun. In full: 10 mile run: After reading the reports on the previous running of this event and the general negativity towards it, I was a little sceptical. I am glad I took the chance on it. The negative previous race was a one off based on what I saw. It went well, it was hard, wet, no chances of getting lost on the course as it was well marked out. I will definitely do it again. Date of review: September 19, 2012
In short: A few short hills In full: No really, they are short hills. They just happen to be practically vertical. At the 7k mark was a hill that drained me for good...and right near the top when I wondered how much longer was a photographer to capture the pain. Awesome!
Highly recommend it. The Brutal guys do factastic races. Small friendly atmosphere races instead of the thousands and you cant find anyone. Keep up the great work. Date of review: August 12, 2012
In short: My thighs hurt more than after the marathon In full: Well. It was vertical. It hurt. It had chocolate brownies at the end. It had marshalls who cheered. Would I do it again? 100% yes. I highly recommend this for anyone who wants to do something a little different. I now have a 12k PB time. It is a similar time to last place in a 10k race. Freakin LOVED it. In short: 2 days later, my legs feel like they are about to fall off. In full: I took the Boxhill leg because I felt I havent hurt myself enough in the past. And it hurt. A deserving pain which will go away long before the memory of the day fades. I'll be back in 2012...and will be doing the whole thing. Great race, great atmosphere, great pain in new places.
