In short: well marshalled, smooth organisation, plenty of water stops but tough Hills!!!! In full: I would definitely do this one again. its my second marathon in 3 weeks after VLM but was pleasantly surprised by the support from the locals and from the marshalls. the weather was amazing, the medal and goody bag fantastic! (Best goody bag ive had including from nyc and vlm marathons!!!)
The hills nearly broke me but im pleased to say that my pb in this race was that i ran the whole thing!!!!! Date of review: May 14, 2012
In short: well marshalled, tough course, made for me by the faster runners congratulating ME as they lapped me!!!!!!!! In full: thought the atmosphere and the welcoming nature of the faster runners was amazing. to hear them say well done to me as they lapped me lifted my spirits in the drizzling rain. One slight grumble..... I entered via a slightly unconventional route...this meant I never saw any info re - no headphones. I travelled up from east kent for this race and also no-one heard anything from the starter announcer (including the starting gun) let alone any comments about headphones. however, i didnt actually have mine in my ears they are a type that means i can hear the music without them being in but can still hear the surroundings. This should have been made clear because the screaming at me by the marshall at the end of the first lap almost made me want to stop. I quite happily removed them so it was more obvious but as a beginner runner and someone who travelled a long way - I was a bit taken aback by the attitude. After all if you are going to ban them due to UKA rules then garmins should not be allowed either. Date of review: March 13, 2012
In short: Well done NICE WORKS!!!!!! flat, perfect weather, nice t-shirt & medal & after race food but more loos needed and slight chaos at water stations In full: panic at the start for the masses of runners and 8 toilets!!!! the start was delayed luckily as the 45 minutes queing for the loo meant that I got to the start line with 2 mins to spare and quite stressed! the water stations were also a bit undermanned and chaotic - a sign as to which side of the road it was would have been welcomed. other than that expect the ususal bright start from martin, loud, clear and friendly, very well organised at the finish with a fab spread of foods to take care of, friendly marshalls and prompt printed results. Well done nice work!!!!!! Look forward to the next race! Date of review: March 13, 2012
In short: tough, scenic, well marshalled In full: first race i have been to on my own, had great day, did actually pb by 7.5 minutes. was a tough course. well marshalled. facilities good. shame didnt get a medal Date of review: January 16, 2012
In short: organisation generally good. pb potential one to watch In full: ditto the comments re the car on the course was interesting!! start and finish could be better organised...marshall near finish was not clear where i had to go! band great! lifeboat crew fab. great to see them follow us. I PB'd despite the rough first and last K. roll on next year Date of review: June 21, 2011
In short: smooth organisation, senic run (not sure about if weathers bad though) PB race for me! In full: organisation smooth as expected from nice works! nice run PB potential as I discovered despite the 2 hills. i can imagine it would be tough if it was windy and rainy but we were lucky and i will 100% do this again! In short: hardcore running! awesome trip! idea fab but poor organisation. next year will be better?? In full: A RACE TO WATCH FOR FUTURE...NOT suitable for beginners...unless you like solo fell running at 5am? we entered as a team of 6 as we were promised by the website and the organiser that we would be joined with another 6. training ensued...car hired..time booked off work etc only to find out at the start that there was no other team of 6 and it wasnt recommended we run?? wtf? we decided to give it a whirl and actually as hard as it was with 6 we made half way before we blew out. night legs too dangerous for girls on their own...8.5 miles across deserted canal at 11pm onwards... doubled up on those. we would have easily made it with 12 and would have been worth it. organsiers need to sort out control at checkpoints as they had no clue who had gone through...suggest team tops?? def not for beginner runners. you must have decent orienteering skills. if you cant read an os map thats poorly marked forget it! i would def do it again with a full team and a minibus is a must - forget the part where they say cars are ok....no way!!! not sure where the food and showers were at checkpoints either. still for a first year it wasnt bad and we totally enjoyed it even if we were disappointed not to make it....between 6 of us we did around 120 miles in total....BRING ON NEXT YEAR... we WILL beat the army!! bring it on for all hardcore runners! goody bags and sweaters are a nice touch.... bring mobiles forget their walky talkies they are pants and did not work!!!
In short: fast friendly still buzzing now In full: thought the repeat laps would be demoralising for a mid to back runner but seeing my friend come through as second lady and maintain it made me look out for her and felt like we ran together. marshalls were fab, plenty of water stations. sponges were a great idea! weather wasnt great but suited me and hey you cant control that anyway! I knocked 11 minutes off my PB so its all good.
Tshirt??? never got one!! Goody bags and food afterwards were non-existant. A banana would have been nice. especially since it was a 2 hour drive home! also think they should have done the prize giving sooner as there was no one there!!!! Date of review: June 15, 2011
In short: start well organised, finish well supported one to add to the list! In full: Great PB potenital. Loved the staggered start really helped me focus the mind! Loved to see faster runners at the finish cheering on us slower runners. wasn't expecting the hill at 7km but still enjoyed the run. well organised and one I will definitely do again!
