In short: Good course but waterlogged this year In full: On any other day, that hadn't been preceded by two weeks of rain, this course would have been a joy to run. As it was it was a mudbath on the return leg. I foolishly wore road running shoes and as a result slipped and fell three times - thank you to the other runners who offered to pick me up at the 17 mile mark.
Support and marshalling was good and friendly. Small improvements that could be made - add a sign on first turnstile and baggage area should be controlled and marshalled.
Would I do it again ? Only if the rain stays away. Date of review: December 24, 2012

In short: Excellent well organised and supported race In full: Really enjoyed this race (and not just because of another PB). Support through town was excellent and very uplifting. Even that hill 1/2 mile from the end didn't dampen spirits as flying down the other side was a fun way to finish. Well organised and easy to get to and, importantly, away from after the race. Would recommend this event to anyone and will be back next year. Date of review: March 23, 2011

2010 Edinburgh Marathon

In short: Frustrating - it may be fast but it's not enjoyable In full: Ran this race in 2009 and a lot of criticisms were voiced at the end of that one. This year things started off really positively when it looked like peoples views had been taken on board with the first change being the toilet arrangements radically changed at the start. The same good atmosphere was present so was anticipating a good fun experience.
As it turned out the start was the only thing that had changed and it's a shame because, as noted on other threads, a few simple changes could make all the difference. Start the race earlier - we're runners and used to early starts - then no-one will have complaints about the heat (how can it happen 2 years in a row). The water stations for the Gosford House cauldron loop must be placed closer to the entry and exit - this is where the race really starts to bite and people were dropping. Those mats at the end - oh my days - enough said.
I'm not going to complain about post-race because although I could see deficiencies I struggled to see, given location, on how it could be improved - maybe the grandstand finish just isn't worth the subsequent hassles. My advice to anyone - use the public transport - I have both times and it was the best option.
So regretfully I won't be returning, as I love Edinburgh, until I see better reviews with clear improvements made in future years. Date of review: May 26, 2010
