In short: A good In full: First time I've done this event and I'm a beginner runner so I was really nervous.
Looking round there only seemed to be a handful of 'non-runners' taking part; it felt quite 'clubby' to me but then I've only ever done charity 5kms and Great Manchester 10km previously.
The women's race tarted on time at 10.30am following the kid's 3km run. Pre-race registration was smooth and there were plenty of loos to use before the race started.
The route was on flat tarmac foot paths around Victoria Park for 80% of race, remainder was looping out round the park on the pavements. You did pretty much two laps of the park although part of it was taken a different direction which was good to mix it up a bit.
The marshalls were very encouraging, even to those non-runners amongst us at the back and spectators along the way were great, cheering and clapping everybody.
Weather was glorious (if a bit too hot for me at 24c!) and there was water available after collecting your medal and Southport & Waterloo AC branded drinks bottle.
Only thing that spoilt it for me were three blokes who were obviously waiting to run in the men's race at 11.00am. They were stood half way down the course and as we passed made rather loud comments that 'F**king hell if you were right at the back like these lot you'd step on the accelerator a bit wouldn't you or what's the point in being here". That's exactly the attitude some beginner runners like myself fear receiving from more experienced runners. As well as being downright insulting it took the shine off what could have been an otherwise pleasant and welcoming race for beginner runners. Date of review: April 22, 2011
In short: Organisation let down what could have been a great race In full: The emphasis was on the good cause with this race, and a great cause it was. most more experienced runners were left disappointed by the poor organisation, late start and badly measured route. I tracked it at about 4km and was one of first to be redirected the "right" way so the first 50 must only have done about 2miles. Probably a good event for those happy to walk/slow jog in fancy dress etc but not for people who train for events and wanted the full 5km! Would just donate next time rather than attend I think.
