In short: Loved it. In full: I like that the race is effectively split into 2 halves between Wirral and Liverpool, and this provides a nice mix of scenery. The support on the wirral side was ok, but the atmosphere in Liverpool was outstanding. The sound of the drums builds up as you climb the tunnel and when you finally emerge, the noise from the drums and the crowd is incredible. After that, running along the strand with such large and vocal support urging you on makes you feel 8ft tall. I was dreading the climb out of the tunnel, but the climb up parliament street is worse. This course may not be the best for PB seekers. Going out of the city to the parks, I expected the support to drop, but this wasn't the case - their enthusiasm carried me round the parks and back into the city.
So, to sum up, this is a great race. Its a nice mix of coast, city and parks, but its the support which makes this race. Special mentions to the drummers on the tunnel exit and the dancers on princes road. A fantastic experience.
In short: Hilly and muddy, but well worth it. In full: This is a fantastic race. As long as you're prepared for mud and hills (and ice this year), you'll love it. The scenery is fabulous and it's well marshaled.
My only complaint is that the course too often becomes bottle-necked. This happened getting out of the starting field this year, then there are reasonably lengthy queues getting over stiles and some of the track later on is single file only.
But, I forgive all of that because the course and how it makes you feel (at the end!) is superb. Not a fast course, but a very worthwhile one. Date of review: February 15, 2012
In short: Very well organised and a good run. In full: Big thanks to the organisers and marshals who have done a great job. I'd definitely do this again. Plus points: - Well marshalled. - Very visible KM markers on the route. - The trail section through the park provided some good variation and added to my enjoyment of the run. Minus points: - Too many 180 degree turns - Having to double back on some sections effectively halved the width of usable pavement and meant there wasn't a huge amount of room to overtake.
Overall, it was very enjoyable and I'd recommend it. Date of review: July 5, 2010
