In short: Make sure you pay close attention to the extra notes.... In full: Came into this expecting a road race, as clearly did a few others that turned up, and found it anything but! Only about 1K was road based, the rest being woodland with very muddy paths (que washing of racing flats!) which bought about a lot of sliding about, a few injuries, and a few close calls. This is CLEALY not a road race, and to suggest it is is very misleading, it should very much be relabelled as a cross-country ready for 2013s event. The best point of the event was probably the start/finish line as there was a village fete going on, which had a decent crowd, and bringing with it a friendly atmosphere. With all the above mentioned, after todays experiences, although nothing massively unplesant, I don't think I'll be going out of my way to return to this event again in a hurry. In short: Good start room for improvement... In full: Was a good race (that wasn't a race(?)), and a fun atmosphere. Very picturesque in a lot of place's, running past Canterbury Cathedral, the new Marlow Theater, and along the city walls, and finishing up where we started in the Don Jon Gardens, albeit it a poorly lit!
The organisation could have been a BIT better! the race was infact quarter of a mile short of a 5k, I'm not entirely sure how sensible it is running a 5k through a busy high street on a saturday night, there was potential for accidents in doing that! and although for the best part the marshalls had doen an outstanding job, I'd personally appricate being directed in the RIGHT direction BEFORE I pass the turn, sure some reading this would be able to appriciate how difficult it is running flat out (which for me over a 5k distance is 10mph) and turning back to make a sharp turn while maintaining top speed. In short: First Marathon and going back for more.... "NEXT!!!" In full: Quite a tight start to the race with everyone packed in like sardines, although everyone appeared to soon find their rightful pace.
I was warned by the Canterbury Harriers coach to expect a tougth first half of the marathon, and it certainly didn't disappoint as I thought I was on a roller coaster for a moment I was up, and down that much!!! Although I don't say that in a bad way as I love a challenge and NEVER sherk a hill.
Second half, as people have already said, was mostly flat as a pan-cake ALTHOUGH it was flat with a heavy head wind at times, and made it feel like I was running into a wind tunnel.
All in all it was a great race day, organisation was near perfect, had a few great spectators and all the Marshalls did an outstanding job. I'm already looking forward to 2012's event, and many more future full marathons. Date of review: September 5, 2011
In full: Got my personal best (39mins 17secs) knocking 7-8 minutes off my PB so yes I'd say it has PB potential. Organisation was good, even if the cups of water could do with being a bit bigger! Even though thats not a big complaint. As soon as I got across the line I was told my place, and had my hand shaken by one of the organisers of the event, hopefully everyone got the same greeting albeit the lady would have been there for quite a while, and on a personal plus, it was right on my door step, can't say fairer than that! Only other VERY minor things that COULD be better but doesn't to me really matter, a better goody bag, maybe a bit more than a t-shirt, and something no one could do anything about, the 30-40mph (which we STILL have...) head winds, would make running life a lot easier without those. In short: Very hilly, but enjoyable In full: Second time I've done the Deal Half-Marathon enjoyed it both times, and certainly going back for more next year! Certainly not one for getting your PB in my opinion, instead being a race that makes you work for every mile marker.
Didn't have any problems other than for 2 drivers blocking the route somewhere around the 8-9 mile marker for a moment, enougth time for another runner and I to have to take a 'bumpy' route.
Still as I say bring on Deal Half-Marathon 2012. Date of review: February 14, 2011
