In short: Excellent race and very PB-friendly In full: Your search for the least scenic race in the UK could well be at an end when you've done this one, but...
It's well organised, with good parking and facilities, and very flat. It attracts some pretty fast runners, but a good mix of slower ones too. The atmosphere is 'unassuming' - no large crowds, fancy dress, marshalls screaming encouragement, medals etc. That suits me down to the ground - I went looking for a PB, got one, and went home very happy indeed. Well done to all involved with putting this race on. Date of review: April 2, 2013

In short: Just lovely! In full: My second year at High Legh. Well organised, excellent pre-race communications, great marshalls and support, good race HQ facilities, flat course, great village atmosphere. 10Ks really don't come much better than this. Well done to all concerned! Date of review: March 5, 2012

In short: Well worth turning out in the snow for In full: The snow didn't have much effect (I wore fell shoes), so well done to the organisers for not cancelling, and for all their extra work to clear the ground. I really enjoyed the race, and the snow made it a bit of an adventure. Organisation and marshalling were excellent. Date of review: February 6, 2012

In short: First time - I'll be back In full: Cracking race. If it were possible to give more than 5 in most categories I would do so. The weather was miserable but the excellence of the event as a whole shone through. It's just a pity I had to jog back to the car right away at the end to ward off hypothermia - it would have been nice to hang around and chat as the atmosphere is incredibly friendly. The marshalls and that star of a commentator deserve special mention. Date of review: December 11, 2011

2011 Cardiff Half Marathon

In short: Low expectations were exceeded by a long way In full: This was my first time at this event, and the issues identified last year seem to have been ironed out. The course wasn't very scenic, and wasn't quite as flat as advertised, but was still fast as they solved many of the congestion problems - I got a PB. The course measured long on my Garmin, though.
The toilet queues at the start were ridiculous, and I had to find some bushes in the end - apologies to anyone living nearby! The starting pens were stupidly divided, with around 80% of runners in the white pen, but I still managed to get to a reasonable starting spot and ran a quick first mile. Only doing medium/XL t-shirts was a daft idea - it left many people feeling worse than if there hadn't been t-shirts at all.
On the plus side, the baggage drop ran like clockwork, and the marshalling was excellent. One or two marshalls were notably enthusiastic (or noisy) and deserve a medal themselves. Date of review: October 17, 2011

In short: Well done to all involved - again! In full: My local HM, and really enjoyable. Forget about a PB, and enjoy the hills (not too gruelling really), the scenery, and the fantastic organisation. A great antidote to over-hyped and overcrowded big city events. 750-ish runners, little or no congestion, and everyone seemed to arrange themselves in approximately the right position at the start, without the need for marked starting pens. In short: Very well organised and friendly In full: Start/finish and marshalling were very well organised and friendly, and car parking is free and right next door. It's a surprisingly challenging 10K, especially as the first couple of miles, along level roads and tracks, lulls you into a false sense of security. After that, there are narrow paths, fields, road bridges, some hills (one very sharp but short). So my splits tell a tale of woe, but I enjoyed the event nonetheless. 2011 Wilmslow Half Marathon

In short: Lovely race with great PB potential In full: My second HM and I really enjoyed it, partly because I sliced 10 minutes off my previous time. I started way too far back but with chip timing that didn't really matter. A very fast course, unless you're unused to even the slightest gradient. Even the hill at the end which is talked about here is quite short. Nice tech shirt in the goody bag. A special mention for the very balletic lady who was martialling the cars out of the Rugby Club car park at the end - 10/10 for artistic impression! Date of review: March 27, 2011

In short: Very enjoyable, lovely atmosphere In full: Not great weather, though at least it stopped raining before the start. There was, however, a noticeable headwind much of the time. Although the course is by no means hilly, my impression is that the first half has more downhills, and the second half more uphills. A very friendly 'community' atmosphere and great organisation both before and during the race. Date of review: March 6, 2011

2010 Tatton Yule Yomp 10K

In short: Fun and very well organised In full: On the day it was very cold and the ground was rock hard - the PB potential rating takes that into account. Had this been a more typical December day things would have been different. I particularly appreciated the highlighting in yellow of roots and rocks with 'trip potential' - thoughtful.
