In short: A mile short In full: A pro events company could have paid marshals to make sure they turned up & actually knew what they were doing. This was a mile short as apparently a marshal had no clue where to direct us, & other people were getting lost due to poor marshaling. Would have been ok otherwise.

In short: Fairly hilly, tough one.....but very scenic. In full: A nice scenic one. I chose this one as it was by the same organisers as Grimsthorpe, & thought it would be an interesting one that respected the slower runners. (Getting greeted by the organiser on the finish line, medal in hand, was a nice touch for us slow buggers.....)
Quite a tough one, especially after back to back marathons every week for 3 months...... Fairly hilly throughout. But good course, & far more interesting than plodding round a big city road marathon.
No water left at the 12 mile drink station, so got a bit dehydrated. Water in bottles would be helpful.
I made it a bit short....??
I'll be back for the Grimsthorpe 70 & half marathon in July.

In short: Good off road HM. In full: No serious hills. Some trail & grass sections, with a long tarmac stretch. Nice run around the castle grounds. Plenty of parking, & you can stay afterwards & look around the castle. Well organised & friendly. T-shirt & medal, & great trophy for doing both this race & the Ultra yesterday...A nice touch. In short: Great first Ultra, & so friendly. In full: This was my first Ultra, having only done 4 marathons.
My main worry wanting to do an Ultra was navigating with a map & getting lost, & not feeling safe as a lone female at night. This is simply not an issue at Grimsthorpe. Easy to follow arrows & no map reading! And completely safe in the closed castle grounds at night.
I guess multi laps aren't for everyone, but I liked the security of the check-point every 10 miles, to grab food & a cheery chat.
Organisers couldn't have been more helpful. Competitors too. My new torch failed to work, & several people lent me one!
A really epic race. Meant such a lot to me. With such a generous time limit for the 70, you really CAN do this race if you want it enough.
Can't wait for next year. (Lovely surprise to get a glorious glass trophy for doing the half marathon too. Very special getting that) Date of review: August 22, 2011

In short: Lovely friendly race overlooking the river. In full: Small, but lovely race. Organised by a fellow runner, Kaja, who does a GREAT job, running as well as organising. I thought it might get boring doing laps, but in fact it was nice running up & down the river, because you could support each other as you passed by. Good view over the Mersey/docks. No time limit, so runners over 7 hours welcome. Super medal in box, & nice t-shirt. Totally flat PB course. Barry the Baton helped me get a PB of 5:24! I'll def be back for the new year races.
