In short: Incredibly scenic with some killer hills In full: Run takes you all the way round the reservoir and through the surrounding forests. Very beautiful setting but does mean the route undulates the entire time with some tough hills. Trail for most of the time but well trodden and I ran it in road shoes with no problems. Plenty of water/isotonic stations and lots of marshals - nearly all of whom were really helpful. Buses for spectators to get to spots other than start/finish was a nice touch but rather disorganised. In short: Even better than last year In full: Last year's event was my first ever marathon and I caught the bug! Back this year and felt more confident as the route hadn't changed. Didn't mean the hills were any easier though. Need to make a particular mention to the spectators - although not huge numbers out on the course, they made such a big noise. And a special mention to the children singing "We wish you a merry marathon". Cute and inspiring! The final mile along the river and into the racecourse is truly amazing. Hundreds of people who don't know you calling out your name and willing you along. Meant I found some energy for that final push. I'll be back next year. Date of review: October 8, 2012
In short: Fast and surprisingly flat, but certainly was a hot one! In full: Done this race five times in a row, and this was certainly the hottest (although Hull for the last 2 years was even hotter). Yes the scenery leaves something to be desired but I would commend the organisers on finding a flat route within Sheffield - no easy task. I'll put up with grim industrial views if that's the trade off. Atmosphere in stadium and Eccleshall Road makes this event special. Cups of water are a joke. Marathon of the North a few weeks ago used Iconiq water pouches - these are brilliant I think. Bit depressing to be overtaken by the two guys in the camel outfit (seeing as I managed 1:40 they were going some!). I'll be back next year ... Date of review: May 28, 2012
In short: Awesome! In full: First full marathon, and so glad with my choice. The organisation was impeccable, and the support around the route was so inspiring. Wasn't sure when I saw my name on the number, but actually hearing strangers calling out your name and willing you along made a massive difference. Finishing at the racecourse worked well - nice place for the family to watch you come in. I'll be back (despite saying this was going to be a one-off!).
In short: My favourite event of the year In full: Once again the weather made this truly difficult. Managed to go 15mins faster than last year, but was still 15mins slower than the Sheffield half a few weeks ago. Really sorry to hear about the collapsed runner - puts everything into perspective.
