In short: A good training run In full: The lack of atmosphere does make this more of a training run rather than an 'event'. I live nearby so may do it again but certainly wouldn't travel any distance to take part. I also agree that the organisers should be more concerned with predicted pace/finish time than gender when deciding the starting order. Date of review: April 3, 2006
In short: This has the potential to be a great Half In full: Despite the wind, rain & mud I thoroughly enjoyed this race. I was on target for a PB at 9miles like a lot of people before hitting the cross country section.
Just a couple of suggestions:-
Info Pack – could have contained a little more information, course profile, mile marks on the map, etc. (did anyone else notice the course map showed us running in the opposite direction?) Changing tents – the sight of cold & tired runners trying to get into dry kit on the seafront was pitiful. Water Bottles – the cups were a serious hazard, especially in the wet and windy conditions & the fizzy stuff at 10miles was not the best idea I’ve ever seen
Final gripe, the 6:20 alarm call text message was a bit annoying since I didn’t need to get up until well past 7:30. Excellent text results service thought.
I’d definitely do it again, hopefully with better weather conditions.
In short: A great race In full: This was my second go at Watford and despite finishing nearly 15mins slower than last time (don’t ask!) it’s still a great race. Very friendly & supportive marshals, which you certainly appreciate a lot more when things aren't going to plan.
Medals would get my vote for next time – when you’re on the course as long as I was you feel like you deserver one!
In short: Dissapointing - could have been a good event but let down by poor organisation In full: Good Points: Loads of toilets at the start Excellent atmosphere finishing in the stadium Fast course - beat my PB by 9mins.
Bad Points: Delayed start totally unacceptable given freezing conditions. Course congested by people who clearly started in the wrong place. Mile Markers - was it just me or were there some missing? Course not clearly marked. I found my self taking unintentional short cuts, and running on the footpath - it just wasn't clear where you were meant to be. Perhaps a few more marshalls would have helped? No Changing tents at the finish - again, unacceptable given the weather conditions. Transport - I anticipated the shuttle buses may be a problem and took my bike on the train. Would recommend this option to anyone considering Reading in future. And thanks to the fellow cyclist who helped me find the stadium!
Overall, I think there is the potential for a really good event here but the organisation lets it down. Date of review: March 7, 2005
