In short: Excellent race - parking still an issue In full: This is an excellent local race so don't be put off by the parking problems but try and liftshare with someone with a 4x4 if you don't want to damage your car getting parked. Date of review: November 12, 2007
In short: Very Fast Course In full: If you're looking for a PB then this is the 10k for you, a couple of gentle inclines are all you have to contend with the whole way round.
I could of done with some better instructions for finding the race - a postcode to put in the sat nav or the name of the actual road where the car car park was would have been nice, but this didn't spoil the event for me and running a PB is always a nice feeling! Date of review: October 8, 2007
In short: Everything a local 10k should be! In full: This race has everything that will keep people coming back year after year. The scenery is very pleasant if you afford yourself any time to look anywhere but straight ahead or at your watch, the course has undulations but nothing that would prohibit a PB if you're on form, the organisation was exceptional - the results for the race were emailed to me within hours of the race finishing! The t-shirts were good quality again. When can I enter next years race??? Date of review: July 9, 2007
In short: Poor from start to finish In full: I hate to criticise a very well intentioned fund raiser BUT I arrived over an hour before the start expecting to park on site but was greeted with a full car park that only had about 20 spaces and a traffic cone blocking the entrance to the school, I had no trouble finding parking on a nearby sidestreet but would have been far happier if the pre race instructions had mentioned that you would have to find your own parking. Having arrived early I was able to witness car after car attempt to turn into the school only to be told there was no parking creating lots of confused and annoyed runners. I have noticed a couple of other comments about the marshaling and unfortunately a marshall ruined my race too, whilst placed in 3rd position and less than 1k from the finish a marshal allowed me to continue straight on instead of turning left and if it wasn't for the runner behind me calling out I'd still be looking for the finish line now! The only thing that cheered me up on the day was the guy that beat me to 3rd place telling me I could claim 3rd as he would never have beaten me had the marshall done his job properly. In terms of value for money from the runners perspective it was very poor - - no parking - limited changing facilities - nowhere to leave your bags - poorly marshaled - 2hr wait for 5k winners to collect their trophies(all but one had left) - Only trophies for 1st place - No team prize My only reason to return to this race next year would be morbid curiosity! In short: I found a solution to the car park problems In full: For some reason I got into my head that the race started at 11am and subsequently arrived at 10.25 with no problems getting parked at all! it took me a further 15 minutes to realise that there weren't any other half marathoners about just the fun runners coming in from the end of their race. This is when I realised that I must have had the time wrong so I had a quick word with one of the organisers who allowed me to start the race 40 minutes late and assured me that the marshalls and drink stations would still be out. Apart from a couple of sections where I managed to go the wrong way(not far) there were marshalls still on the course and the people at the first drink station who had packed up were kind enough to fetch me some water from their car for which I was very grateful considering the heat. I managed to catch up with the back of the race at 6 miles and so my lateness became less of an issue in the second half of the race. The reasons my ratings are not higher for this race are that I don't like to off road section of the race it hurts my feet through my racing flats, getting to and from the race by car can be a nightmare although this year it seemed better and I also dislike running in the heat which isn't helped by the 1.5 mile uphill drag at the end. In short: Big Race atmosphere, good practise for London, a few organisational issues In full: First of all the instructions sent out weren't very good, owing to the fact that they gave you a map with all the car parks off brentwood high street(which are signposted anyway) but not the location of the start. I arrived slightly later than I would normally for a race(due to poor instructions) and found myself at the back of the crowd with a couple of minutes to go before the start but decided not to push down to the front as I thought position would be decided by chip time, so I was very disappointed this morning to check the results and find that although I had the 17th fastest time I was given 19th position! How is that fair? If they know I'm 17th fastest why not give me 17th position? Surely the guy who was given that position would concede that he only finished in front of me because he had a 1 minute head start! Why chip time an event and then not use the results? Despite these problems that I had the route has PB potential and the race is good practice if you've entered london and want to experience a big(ish) race beforehand. Date of review: March 26, 2007
In short: Nice course In full: I had one of those races here where all the hills seemed to be downhill! A new PB for me and a time I will find tough to beat next year.
My only grumble was the car parking situation, my car got very stuck in the field that was being used for the car park, next year if the grass is cut in that field it might be easier to avoid driving straight into the divets. Date of review: November 20, 2006
In short: A good race poorly organised In full: My experience of yesterday's race was very positive owing to the good running conditions and the flattish course. I set a new PB by over a minute and finished somewhere in the top 40.
Unfortunately many other people at the race didn't have as good an experience as I did. firstly due to the dire car parking situation at the start - if you cant provide parking for 600 runners in your race don't accept 600 entries! and secondly the finish of the race runs along the exit of the car park, through the car park and into the stadium, this caused 2 problems as beginners that didn't have anyone to follow didn't know where to go once they reached the car park and even at the front of the race there were cars coming out of the car park and getting in the way of the runners.
Hopefully there were lessons learnt this year and the organisation will be much better next year. Date of review: November 20, 2006
In short: Great Race! In full: This Half Marathon's got a bit of everything! There's the very flat start and finish along the seafront, and the nasty little hill straight after, then there's the excellent rural setting followed by the well supported urban section, there's real PB potential too as the last 3 miles of the course are mainly flat or downhill. The only 2 grumbles I can come up with are the spectators getting in the way at the finish and the price of entry on the day, but I ran a massive PB so those things are long forgotten now! In short: Best local race this year so far In full: I've done this race every year since I started running and it's one of my favourites. The course is mainly flat so good times are possible also the route comes back into the village at 5k so supporters get to see the start finish and middle of the race. The organisation is first rate all the kilometres are clearly and accurately marked and after the race has finished there's plenty of stalls to look at and pubs to drink in.
