In short: Flat 10 miler In full: Ok it's a flat 10 miler but certainly not the best. Am I the only person who thinks the HQ of the pub is rubbish? The bag storage was completely unsupervised and when I returned mine and many other bags had been moved to set up some kind of dining area. The lights were so dim in there it took me 15 minutes to find my bag which had been dumped right at the other end of the room. Parking was also pretty terrible, took me quite a while to find a space and I arrived an hour early.
Lots of mute marshalls; I have no idea why this race is rated so highly. Date of review: October 14, 2007
In short: Top drawer off roader In full: 4th year in a row, and it's still the same excellent race, with a few improvements. I have no idea how people claim to have got lost this year as it was excellently sign posted and marshalled. Those people only came in 3 or so minutes after me so that's a mystery. Always have visions of running Caridac and Heartbreak hill but it never happens :/ Date of review: September 10, 2007
In short: Top notch half! In full: Thought this was really well organised, and had the feel of a bigger city half marathon. The police were out in great numbers and with the number of marshalls on course, it made for a safe run. A few impatient drivers but then you get them everywhere......
Thought the miles markers were all a bit out and made the course 13.3 miles but it was a glorious day so it didn't matter.
Superb momento, absolutely top notch! Date of review: April 1, 2007
In short: Is tough guy going soft or mad? In full: Run was much, much easier this year. Jolt on the electric hanging wire was huge, and made me jangle for a few minutes. Vietcong tunnels have been shortened. Water dunks shocking as ever, and my head was spinning for a good 30 seconds after the underwater tunnel. Date of review: January 29, 2007
In short: 1st Class Christmassy run In full: Good to see more people making the effort to dress up this year, there was a real fancy dress presence which was great!
Really well marshalled and good police support. Course it mildly undulating with a lightning quick 1st mile, I always do my fastest 5k of the year on this course even in full Santa gear.
Nice pud and spot prize of some chocolates! Only minor gripe is they could do with something other than water at the finish, squash at least would be nice after breathing through a santa beard for 30 minutes :) Date of review: December 10, 2006
In short: Top notch off roader In full: Very well organised race, a watered down hellrunner. Yes there's lots of water but it's not that dirty so makes you more wet than grimey. Rains this week helped make the course more fun. A few pinch points, but grateful for the organisers putting on an extra day on Saturday for us late bods :) Date of review: December 2, 2006
In short: Absolutely superb off roader In full: The course is an absolute off road cracker..Well thought out with plenty of tough ups and downs....Water only really starts from 4 miles, but makes sure you go through every one!! :)
Bogs were superb although there was plenty of debris under the surface which made it easy to pick up some cuts. Also loads of gnarly stones and bits of wood on course that looked pretty dangerous if you were unlucky enough to fall onto.
Agree with the lack of First Aid on course, need a few more from miles 4-10 dotted around in strategic places.
Off road shoes made a real difference as the last 5 miles were really sandy and loose. Organiser should replace that cold coffee stuff in the bag for a simple banana!!
Overall though a top notch event!!!! Date of review: November 13, 2006
In short: Running for the lowest common denominator In full: Seriously, all these 10k charity events do is encourage non runners to try and run 10k with little or no training. The mass field looked like they couldn't run around my sofa let alone a testing hilly partly off road 10k. Ok probably 1/3 of the field were prepared for this test, but thats still 750 potential accidents on this uneven course.
Completely unsurprised to see 2 ambulances hairing round the course and the air ambulance landing as I finished. This course really isn't suitable as a Cancer research 10k venue, the course is too hard for complete beginnners and the off road sections are really dangerous with recent heavy rain.
Front of the field was fast enough. Although I finished next to the first lady in around 40 minutes and she didn't get any recognition casue the officials were fiddling with the broken time clock....Also start was delayed as it is every year here due to the stupid aerobics 'warm-up'.
