In short: Muddier than last year....fantastic! In full: Loved it last year, loved it even more this year. I didn't get embroiled in the car parking nightmare, opting instead for the gravelled car park and the long walk to the start. Baggage area was great for an unaccompanied runner like me!
First hill still horrible, but the bogs and the mud were better than last year by miles! The first stinky one was great, and the party atmosphere amongst crowd and runners was fantastic. Music by the bogs was a nice touch, and the shortened finish section meant I could get cleaned off whilst the mud was still wet!
Great t-shirt and goody bag.... I'll be back for more next year..... again! Date of review: November 8, 2010

In short: First time for this 50, and loved it - great for a 1st timer, friendly and not too hilly! In full: We started in the dark at 6am, and my only aim for the day was to try to finish before it got dark again... which I did.... just about. I was hoping for anything under 14 hours, so a neat 12hrs 34 went down nicely.
Very friendly, well stocked checkpoints. I do all these events on my own, but still ended up with a bunch of cheerleaders at each checkpoint.
I got lost 4 times in the first 10 miles, but then decided to watch where I was going (!) and didn't get lost again. The maps are fantastic - I wish every ultra did these!!
My favourite ultra this year, and I'll be back for more next year too! Thanks!
P.S. Really nice techie-t and badge too! Thanks! Date of review: October 18, 2010

In short: Good fun, but not as muddy as last year! In full: I LIVED this race last year - it was boggy EVERYWHERE, mud all over the place and lost trainers abounded. This year, it was not as boggy and the course was not as good. Last year we were hauled over the de-forested areas and traipsed through a lot more of the boggy woodland. This was shown this year by the loops we had to do at the end to make up the miles.
In fairness it was a nice one to do, but having done it twice now, I doubt I'll trudge all the way up to Glasgow to do it again next year. I'll try one of the other ones in the north of England and pray for rain!! Date of review: October 15, 2010

In short: Fab race - great terrain - proper trail! Glorious weather and great organisation! In full: I cancelled on another event to do this as it is close to home (about 10 mins drive) and boy was I pleased! Despite doing a small amount of my training in this area, I found new areas to explore and gained a better appreciation of the trails available to me. The weather (thank goodness) was glorious, people were friendly/chatty and the course was undulating rather than hilly. Really enjoyed it, and a great techie-T at the end! Fabulous - I'm booking in for next year already! Date of review: October 15, 2010

In short: Tough, challenging, muddy, fun and great value! In full: Not a great race for me personally as I was still recovering from running 56 miles last weekend in the Bullock Smithy! However, I'd intended ona tough 'plod' and I certainly got it. Very undulating, very muddy and squishy which played a bit of havoc with my ankles. However, I got home safely (and dry, if a bit mucky) and managed the full 26.2 miles in one pieces and with a couple of bruises (from falling). Great value, nice techie-T, good atmosphere (at least at the back!). I'll be back next year, but I'll leave the ultra the week before OUT of the equation this time! I've never eaten so many broken biscuits before, but they were a real treat! Date of review: September 13, 2010

In short: Fantastic obstacles, but not enough of them - good fun! In full: It's further than we'd normally travel, and we certainly wouldn't usually go that far for a 10km race - however, we were drawn to the obstacle elements. The obstacles were fab - but there weren't enough of them! The river crossing was great (cold, but safe), the obstacles in the field were good too, but more out on course would have been better. Toilets packed up early on in the rugby club which caused issues - I think at one point there were less than half the female toilets working. Baggage storage would've been handy for those not fortunate enough to have people there to support, but the key storage was a good idea.
It's a new race, and I know they will take comments on board and this will just get bigger and better. We entered early, but for £30 it's quite steep for an hour's entertainment.
If you haven't had a go at a race like this before - DO IT.... but its a bit far for us to travel and a bit steep for us to pay for a 10km run. Date of review: May 16, 2010

In short: Fantastic organisation, scenery, weather and value for money! In full: Well, I've never run almost mon-stop for 33 miles before, but now I know I can! The baked-hard ground (often rutted in places or on a mean camber) didn't help much, but the sun was welcome! We ran-walked the last 7 miles and at no point did I ever think I wouldn't be able to finish, dpiste it being my first ultra. The addition of extra checkpoints to cope with the warm weather was definitely a good idea. Overall, a very friendly race, perfect for your first 40 miler - and thanks to my new friends Andy (Map-man) and Simon (Iron-Man) for making it a fun (!) day. I now ache in places I didn't know I had places! Date of review: April 19, 2010

In short: Despite the lack of training cos of snow - got a PB, so can't complain!! In full: After the false start of the cancellation in January, I was panicking at not having got my miles on feet to run well today. However, the flat course, jokes from the starter and clapping of the marshalls got me round in a PB. The only complaint is that I have to set myself a new target for this year now..... but that's a nice complaint to have! Date of review: February 7, 2010

2009 Puma HellRunner 11

In short: Great fun, but be prepared for mud in places you didn't know you had! In full: Despite terrible weather reports, I braved Hellrunner 2009. 6 weeks after having my appendix out (and with weeks of enforced rest) I thought I may struggle round. However, the mildly undulating forest tracks were flat in comparison to the Cumbrian fells, so I flew round (for me!) and had a fantastic run. You'll never do a PB on trail/mud runs, but that's not what Hellrunner is about. It's about helping people up when they fall, getting caked in mud and having a fantastic laugh along the way. It's a good trail run with mud and scrambles up/down in between. Fantastic - and I'll be there in 2010 too! Great goody bag and T-shirt too!! Date of review: November 2, 2009

In short: I was covered in mud and laughed more than I have in years! In full: Well worth the trek over the border and the hotel room bill for this race. Well organised, great course with lots of challenged. Friendly bunch, everyone helping each other and having a laugh. The best 10 miles I've ever run/crawled/scrambled and will definitely be back for more. Great goody bag, with fantastic technical T which was worth the entry in itself!
