In short: If you haven't yet done this one, perhaps you should. In full: This is the second time I have done this race, so I can confidently say that the smooth organisation and the friendly marshalling aren't a fluke (thank you). This race is hard enough to feel rewarding, but not so hard you can't enjoy the fantastic scenery. And what better way to celebrate the end of the summer? The clocks go back the day after this race, so you can rest your aching limbs for an extra hour. Date of review: October 30, 2011

In short: A good city half In full: Never done this race before, but I really enjoyed it. It was pretty much flat, with a few bridges thrown in for texture. Having read others' reviews, the route doesn't seem to have been popular, but I really loved running on the closed roads and even found the wide, smooth, elevated dual carriageway was exciting in its way. Perhaps I don't get out enough? One carriageway was open to traffic and this traffic had nowhere to go so all the drivers were sitting in a traffic jam with their engines running, and fuming (and making fumes) as we ran past. Really liked the loops and corners where you could see other bits of the race. Great support throughout, often in unexpected places. Never raced past a working steel mill before - that's something to appreciate in a post-industrial country. The last few miles across the barrage were just wonderful, but there was a completely unnecessary water station at Mile 12-ish that made things draw to a halt. Medal was nice, cotton T-shirt will be pyjamas (ho ho, my OH has one too so we could be crazy-people-in-matching-pyjamas if we so chose). I felt as though the race and the route gave me the chance to run as fast as I was able, and I was pleased with my time. Date of review: October 17, 2011

In short: This race continues to improve... as my running declines. In full: I like this race, and now I have done it 5 times- it is local and it fits well into my marathon training schedule. It all seems to work well - not so much queueing, clearly directed and signposted, well marshalled and well-supplied drinks stations. There are admirable efforts to recycle some of the mountains of rubbish that this event generates. It is, as others note, HUGELY expensive. I didn't take a goody bag because it was obviously a plastic bag full of just more recycling. T-shirt and medal are good quality. I like that the race accommodates the two extremes of running - elites to walk/runners, and it is adds a sense of occasion for mediocre plodders like me. Date of review: September 12, 2011

In short: Exciting idea but shocking organisation from 2:09. In full: The race provided a stimulating run through the dark forest, and this in itself was enjoyable and exciting. But there was no water station, no distance markers, no marshalls and a certain amount of confusion between the marathon/half marathon and 10K routes. For £15 it was a dreadful rip-off. The course I ran was just over 12K. 2:09 events need to have a think about this one. Date of review: September 4, 2011
