Hi Helen,

Well I started running last June with a view to doing a 10K race in July so talk about leaving it a bit late but I am happy to say I did manage it.

To achieve this though I joined a running club and ran 2 nights a week, one runner in particular took me under his wing and joined me in the 10k he kept me going in times when I would have given up.

Do you run in a club or do you run alone?

I always find that when running alone it's quite easy just to say sod it and give up whereas if you've got someone with you talking to you and giving you support It seems a lot easier.

It also doesn't matter how fast/slow you are, I am not a fast runner at all but have mangaged to build up to run about an hour covering about 5 - 5.5 miles.

Just try and get out a couple of times a week at a comfortable pace and each week try a littler further distance.

Hi Poddler, Unfortunately I work about 15 miles away from home (Inc.some stonking hills) and I've not run that kind of distance yet, I've only covered about 7 miles so far the other problem is there are a lot of areas between work and home that are just country roads without pavements so it's not dead safe.

I am supposed to be doing my first half marathon at the end of March... ha ha... so I've got to stop being lazy and get my act together.

Hi there, just joined RW and read a few messages on here. Started running last July, split from my fella and seriously needed to get into shape, didn't fancy a gym, everyone just seemed to be there to gossip and show off their latest designer gear so i joined my local running club and to be honest i've never looked back. I am not a fast runner and just like to plod at my own pace, i must admit though i'm getting a bit slack what with the cold weather, get home from work and then try and find an excuse not to go, things like oh no, two drops of rain that's it i'm not going etc.. is it just me being lazy or do any of you feel the same?
