Crazyhorse - I'm going for a huge number of jabs today after a slightly last minute holiday plan, so can't comment yet but will let you know if any weird effects!

Velociraptor - thanks for the helpful post!

The info about normal iron/"low" haemoglobin is interesting, and this is what they measure at blood donor centres isn't it?

I was convinced I was abormally tired yesterday afternoon but then I remembered I hadn't had my daily cup of super strong coffee :-)

thanks for the post

The sweating thing is interesting, but I've always done lots of sport (not necessarily running) so sweated a lot (!) and never had low iron... I suppose I was curious about whether there is something particular about hard running training that affects iron levels?

I know elite athletes esp. women are more prone to anemia, but not why....

Hmmm. I wonder how long it takes to get back to normal after intense training? And if your body eventually adapts if you train hard over a period of time?

I have been a bit breathless during exercise but otherwise not especially tired... Good excuse for lots of dark chocolate though!

LL - good point about the carbs. I wonder if my diet wasn't as great as I thought it was during heavy training.

Nessie - am intrigued to see what anyone else has to say about the mashing up of red blood cells!!

Hi

I've been a regular blood donor for 10 years and never had any problems. I gave blood last november just before starting training for london as my first marathon... went back today and got sent away as my iron is too low!

My diet is good and I eat plenty of iron rich foods. I seem to remember reading once that increasing training can reduce iron - does anyone know if this is true?

Just curiousity really, as I feel fine otherwise.
thanks!
EB
