I'm 51 and started running properly about 3 years ago when I decided to fulfill my ambition and trained as a nurse. I had originally started my training back in the 70s but due to epilepsy couldn't finish it.  I walked the dog to stay sane whilst studying but he was killed in a road accident so running it was -  I could switch off and acheive a sense of fulfilment and well being.

I've since run the Race for Life twice, Hastings Half Marathon, several 10ks,  Great South and in 2007 FLM. I ran it for Headway and manged to raise £2500. Running the FLM is something that the males in my family do with me being the first female. I trained really hard but luck was against me and the weather produced the hottest marathon ever! I managed 5 hours 3 mins - 1 minute slower than my brother-in-law (the fastest so far). Now determined to strike a blow for middle aged women and beat this I have a place through the ballot. Its been a tough year - my father died, a new job didn't work out , I've lost money in the financial crisis, been seriously ill and nearly lost my holiday through XL so running kept my sanity!

I would love to have help and support for my next attempt - I've had a life of supporting others and taking the 'back seat' so having this would mean the world to me.

I got in too! BUT am going to defer until 2010 as I am only just back to running after an achilles injury and will be away for first 2 weeks in April now as I booked it convinced I wouldn't get in again! I suppose I could run but I really want to do well this time after not making my time goal last year I was a bit disappointed but this time I'm going to beat my brother-in-law!!!

Been using NB 901s - brilliant shoe from the very first step but can't get them again so have had to change. I've gone for NB1060 which seemed fine in the shop but caused real problems when I ran - comments please?? Are these shoes very different? They were recommended by the shop but are nothing like the others. Alternatively anyone interested in a brand new pair D width - only done 2 miles!

Thanks Duncan I'll go and try some. I found the 900s recently in Brighton and they fitted like a glove as soon as I put them on - imagine how I felt when she said they didn't make them anymore!!!
