I am running for Macmillan Cancer Support on the 25th April. My Grandma died a couple of years ago as she had lung cancer (non smoker too!) Macmillan nurses made her very comfortable in her final weeks. My God father also died last year after trying to fight prostate cancer and, again Macmillan nurses were there every day in the last weeks to offer their support and make him smile. He, too was a keen runner when he was younger and handed me his much loved stop watch (from the 1940's) before he died and told me to look after it and use it for my running, bless him.

My husband also was a cancer sufferer. One day he woke up with a huge lump in his right armpit. A few days later, when it hadn't gone away he went to the GP who said it was probably glandular fever and would need a blood test. When we were told there was a 3 week wait, we went for a second opinion. He was sent for a scan immediately and we were sat down and told the devastating news that he had cancer and it had spread to most of his lymph nodes in his body.We were told that he may only have 3 weeks to live! I will never forget that day and at the time we had only a 1 year old and a 3 year old. The lump was removed and fortunately (??) it was diagnosed as being Hodgkins lymphoma. After 10 months of fortnightly chemo, the cancer had disappeared. He has just had his 5 years all clear so we are keeping our fingers firmly crossed that it never re appears.

I started running whilst he was ill as it was a great stress reliever and I could cry whilst pounding the streets instead of infront of him and the kids.

Good luck on Sunday everyone!!!

I am doing my first London marathon (or any marathon) on 25th April. I'm up to my 19 mile run and have my 20 mile training run this Sunday at Hemel Hempstead. i was meant to do a 9 miler today but only managed 1 mile as I too have been suffering with the whole head cold, sinusitis, swollen gland thing. i thought I'd give it a go but failed miserably and only managed to walk 4 miles instead Felt like I couldn't breathe properly and was quite light headed, even after a good breakfast etc. I'm not going to push myself now so I'll hopefully be better by Sunday. Looking forward to the tapering after that when the mileage goes down again until the big day!!! Hope you feel better soon and I wouldn't stress about missing training as it'll set you back.

Good luck with kicking the smoking. I smoked for years (apart from when pregnant) and stupidly kept re starting a few months after. I'm running the London Marathon in April too and I decided to quit in October after my birthday celebrations as I knew I couldn't train and smoke. I haven't looked back since. I went cold turkey without the patches etc and I cannot believe how easy it's been this time round. I'm still in shock and not even really been tempted to go back, even though I have been left sitting alone in the pub for what seems like hours whilst friends disappear outside. I think the first 2 weeks has got to be the toughest time. Well I've done over 2 months now and am feeling very positive about the hard few months training smoke free. Best of luck and Happy New Year!!
