Look up hallux rigidus. I have it in both big toes, I suffer more pain when at rest so I still run. The symptoms are pain and swelling in the joint, limited Dorsi flexion(upwards movement) Had it 4 years and I've decided not to have any surgery - not at the moment anyway! |

| Look up/google hallux rigidus. It translates as 'big toe stiffness'. I have it in both my big toes. I went to the GP and was told 'dont go on any long walks' and that surgery to fuse the joint was the only option. I have been seeing a Physio via work, who manip0ulates both joints (it is painful though!), this maintains your ability to have some range of movement in the toe. It also breaks up bone spurs and will encourage the cartilage to regrow. Explore all your options but get some medical advice, in particular re the running. |

HIya, I have it both my big toes, its been really painful the last few weeks. If you search under Hallux Rigidus you will see posts from other people! I'm nowhere near operation stage, I run once a week, but I was advised not too, I have run marathons, 1/2's and 10K's and I miss it. I now cycle a bit but due to the pain I have lost fitness! Its horrid. Ive had very little advice on the condiction and how to manage it I'm afraid. I have now started limping in times of extreme pain! So I think it may be operation time. I think if you enjoy skiing and hill walking you will be runnin (sorry!) into trouble with the condition as these activities invole dorsi flexing the toe (Toe towards you) it will bring on the pains. I'd wai until after your op and take any physio offered! Good luck, I know how you feel ! |
