I ran the FLM 4 years ago and was struck by v. painful heartburn/indigestion from 17 miles - I never, ever suffer from this and thought at the time it was due to the combination of drinks/gels I had taken on board as I did not do what I had done in training.  I ran yesterday's VLM and had practised my gel/drinking strategy in all my long runs.  My longest was 22 miles, I took 6 TORQ gels which had been great and had no problems.  Yesterday, I followed my training strategy and at 19 miles, exactly the same heartburn as I suffered 4 years ago returned, it was so painful and I could only sip water until the end.  I suffered for the rest of the day and still have a slight effect now, despite taking Gaviscon.  I just wondered if anyone else has suffered from this during the marathon as it is so strange (and horrid) that it has struck me twice at the same event.

I am so glad that someone has put this thread on here.....having read so many PB stories and thought maybe it was only me who had a shocker. Having trained by the book, I felt fine, and...used a Camelbak with diluted Lucozade Sport in training..which caused a dilemma - should I take it with me on the day? I eventually decided against it.....big mistake....stick to what you've done in training. I had neat Lucozade Sport, water, jelly babies and then a Powergel in first 12 miles....all fine but by mile 17, I had chronic heartburn, it was vile, followed by tightening quads. I kept going to mile 21, then had to walk/run the rest of the way and did 4hrs 31 - had hoped to do under 4 - and had chronic indigestion for the rest of the day. Started in pen 8 of the blue start, also frustrating due to mass congestion and the fact we had to walk for a few minutes having crossed the started line and run for 2 minutes. If I'm honest, I don't plan to do another FLM but definitely another marathon with a smaller field and....I will be doing exactly as I did in training....big lesson learned :o(

Thank you, I really appreciate your views and will think about it seriously over the next couple of weeks, still tempted but may be brave on the day!

I have been using a 1.5l Camelbak backpack in all my training runs (filled with Lucozade Sport/water) and although I know that there is water/Lucozade Sport every x miles at the FLM, I am keen to take my Camelbak to a) avoid congestion at drinks stations and b) because I'm used to using it, it causes no problems and have run as far as 21.2 miles with it. I just wondered if anyone else is having this dilemma or has used one before during a marathon?

I have just started this (week 2) and am finding it great as it is based on time rather than mileage - I just wondered if anyone used to last year and how they rated it?
