Just looked at the route maps - and there is a lot more road mileage on the bike route than I'd ever do - it's just not compatible with proper offroad tyres - and tarmac is much much too easy - I'd say.

So ... it's a Duathlon really

I've started doing some of the HR off-road ones - very character building they are too !

I quite like the idea of all the running in one go (they are often something like 10k run, 20k bike, 5k run) but I think I'd prefer the bike then run (like Triathlons do) but it wouldn't really matter what order - you are still knackered at the end !!!

Would this be a Double Knacker perhaps ?

Andre this sounds very much like an achilles issue? Are you able to be a bit more precise with the location description?  If it is the achilles then you need to tread and treat it very carefully as it has a habit of lingering and being hard to get rid of
Check out some eccentric loading exercises and in the meantime I would rest  and reassess
Could also possibly be a peroneal tendon problem and I would probably take the same advice

Thank you...But Anybody ..What are eccentric loading exercises??

There is a reasonable write up with pics here:

Many thanks on behalf of all of us !

It has been very interesting following your answers (I really should be working !) and I shall read through them all again tonight.

Thanks sarah, but it is really difficult finding a physio that is interested in people who go out and do proper exercise !

You say 'address the cause' but the only hint I've had is poor blood supply if it is tendonosis - so how does one improve blood supply around the achilles when training in the winter ?

I'm coming up to 2 weeks after my last 10k hill ace and I can do one-leg exercise on the bad leg now, so am thinking of restarting training very gently this time (so at least my dogs stop shouting at me )
