I have a pair of black Fred Perry leather "plimsolls". Apart from the rubber rand all around them they are hardly distinguishable from normal shoes, and that hardly notices. The sole is somewhat harder than normal plimsolls.
You are not "supposed " to do anything, but I always do, because I find commando uncomfortable. Each one to their own view, though. I suggest you try with and without, and make up your own mind.
Do you have a local branch of the NCT, and do they have nearly new sales, because you might get one there if they do. Get one with a "fixed" front wheel if you can.
Andy Runs states "Lycra doesn't look good on anyone other than in photo-shopped adverts." As always with appearances, it is a matter of personal opinion, and I certainly do not agree with him.
It can look very good, but this is usually on someone slenderer rather than someone sturdier, where it can sometimes look odd.
What I think looks very odd is blokes wearing shorts over running tights, but again, it is a matter of opinion.
When shorts are quoted as 5", what seam or other part measures 5"? Also, why are shorts so long these days? As VU states, getting short shorts seems to be almost impossible these days
