Gordon Pirie in his book "Running fast and Injury Free" certainly advocates plimsolls, which is why I tried them. They don't last all that long, but they are so cheap that doesn't matter, and they don't suffer from midsole collapse without the wearer noticing and then causing injuries. Search for "adult plimsolls" on the web and you should find various suppliers.
I use plimsolls like - http://www.w-h-thomasandson.co.uk/r4300.htm. Similar are available from other places. Get the correct size, and there will be toe space, too small, and there won't be! If in doubt get bigger rather than smaller.
sTitch do fashion leggings for men in various patterns, though I have no experience of them, so I do not know how good they would be for running in. Adidas now seem to be listing mens patterned running tights, again I have no experience of them, but their black running tights are very good, so probably the patterned ones are also
