I just completed a 10k yesterday and experienced numbness in my left foot. I seem to have a very tight left calf and after about 6k I could hardly feel my foot at all. When I removed an ankle chip (timer) and loosened my shoes at the end the numbness left almost immediately. I have read all these threads and my symptoms appear to be quite common. Not a very pleasant sensation and a little bit freaky at the time.

I play a lot of football and also do a bit of road running to build my stamina. My furthest run tends to be 10k. However, recently when both walking and running i am experiencing servere pain in my calves (mostly my left one). When running I use a pair of Ascis Gel Cumulus which are reasonably good shoes and dont seem to be the problem. I am not sure if the pain is caused by a muscle tear (similar to those described) or whether I simply have 'tight' calves and am not stretching enough. The pain can cause a numbness feeling in my left foot when doing say distances of 6 - 10k. When playing football though I dont seem to experience this pain as running shorter distances at short bursts of speed. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be my problem?

Thanks for useful comments! I have been playing competitive sports for many years and tend to run on balls of feet. I went to see a running specialist this week and he advised me to get a pair of stability shoes. Bought an excellent pair of Ascics and went for 5 mile run last night with NO calf pain! Couldnt believe it and just shoes that proper shoes make all the difference. Long may it continue!!

Many thanks. I think that may be the case and must look into new trainers.

Very similar symptoms to mines. Really tight tendons and think a visit to running shop specialist may be first port of call! After that, physio if necessary.
Useful thread.
