Ditto. on the South Downs Half. The second climb of Butser was in the back of my mind the whole way round, and man it was tough going up it again after 12 miles! I have contacted Ditcham School already to ensure there is no event clash.
We hire the local sports field at South Harting to park on with loads of room. There is a small risk that if there is heavy rain a few days before hand the field will out of bounds for cars. It's then verge parking and around the village.
Road shoes should be fine as most of the route is hard packed graval tracks and a few stretches of tarmac.
You two seemed to have cornered this thread! Pity about the hill climb cycle race at Ditcham Park school and them not being able to share the road space. How did the marathon runners fair along the school's drive section? It made it a bit of a challenge on the half to know we had to climb Butser at the end. So many runners walking up the hill at the end. Still an enjoyable event but legs are so sore at the moment. On the lane we used instead of the original route we sheared the lane with a load of cyclists doing a sportify. No problems, loads of positive comments from a lot of them. Nice one!
I was the one at the end trying to give out entry forms out to tired runners!
Done it a few times but doing the Polsdon Lacey 10km this year instead. I'd call it undulating rather than hilly. There are quite a few uphill sections but all short in length. The middle bit is out and back, so you know what's coming on the way back. Leave a bit for the start of the last mile for the small climb up from the river. Once you hit the main road it's flat along the path and round the sports field.
