Hi everyone, it's been a long while since I was last here, perhaps I should tell a brief story before asking questions. April 06 I started running, not having done any since I was at school. I loved it, followed the training plans on here and completed my first grown-up 5k in July in around 31 mins. Shortly afterwards though I injured my knee and in late Nov '06 I had an arthroscopy, and the back of the kneecap debrided. One of my last posts on here read a bit like this... "I'm hoping to be off the bench shortly, but my surgeon and fizz have both made it abundantly clear that they think I'm mad if I start running again. Apparently the bit of cartilege that was removed is in the part of the knee that bears the full brunt of any impact. Sadly it is a sports fizz place I'm going to, and 2 of them have had I'm clearly not suited to running Last conversation with fizz he said the only running I should be doing was to the pub if it was almost closing time." So now 2 and a bit years later I haven't really done any running, I still really miss it and cannot get into a routine with any other sport or fitness class, am putting on weight and am pretty fed up. Most of the time my knee is fine and I completely forget there was ever anything wrong with it, other days I get the odd twinge but nothing too bad. The fizz did eventually say if I really wanted to run to go back and we could work on it. I'm thinking now I might pay him a visit (and hope his rates haven't gone up too much and that I don't need too many sessions) So, now the questions. What experience have others had of going back to running after this sort of surgery, am I mad to start running again, and if I do start again should I be working on a programme of walking for a while before starting running again? Any comments/suggestions very welcome! |

It must be an early Xmas present, my knee is beginning to feel semi-normal again and the scars are healing ok : D Hope the rest of you are recovering and in a positive frame of mind.
Although with all the junk I'm eating soon the added weight could put a bit much strain on it.
Could someone pass a fleecy blanket, its a bit chilly down here! Weather forecast just said a small chance of snow. |

LOK, I hope your ankle settles a bit and that the arthroscopy works out well!

Its def the week for it, saw the surgeon again today, stitches are out and he's arranged more physio for me. Have been told to keep taking paracetamol and ibuprofen as bending beyond a certain point is still painful and have been told to keep using the crutches as I need them, he says its important that I walk properly and if its sore using the crutches will help.
So its pretty good overall : )[although I nearly hit the deck when he started showing me pics of the inside of my knee]
So how did it go for you LOK? Good news I hope! |

| I haven't had a good listen but I assume they got rid of the fluid before they stitched me up as I haven't noticed any sloshing. I don't mind tv gore and guts but when its me (or right in front of me) I'm useless |
