Don't know if anyone can help but I am looking for advice re a hip flexor problem. I have run 3 marathons, the first in 2005 with no problems, the second in 2006 where I got pain from mile 18 on, and then the third in 2007 with no problems (although it was a very hot Chicago marathon that got stopped when I was at mile 20). In all of these I followed the same RW training sub 4 training schedule.

I decided to have a year off marathons last year, although still doing occasional short runs, nothing more than 6 miles. However at about mile 4 my right hip flexor tightens up and gets sore, and if I continue my hamstrings on the same side also tighten up. I try stertching the problem hip, but it doesn't seem to make much difference. I have tried massage and ibuprofen gel. Had an MR that showed some mild inflammation in my iliopsoas tendon and also hamstrings on that side, and a small paralabral cyst.

Resting relieves the pain, but as soon as I try to run again beyond 4 miles i get the symptoms again.

Should I just give up distance running??

thanks

Sounds like chronic compartment syndrome. See other post but would recommend stretches for tibialis anterior(that's the muscle you are describing)

I had this problem a few years ago, affected one leg more than the other. Went to sports physio got massage and ultrasound and instructed on one basic stretch. I religiousltydid this stretch 3 times a day and managed to control the symptoms and allowed me to train for marathons, so would recommend that rather than surgery, but you need to be committed to doing the stretching. Interestingly I have tried (and failed) to change my running style to land more on my forefoot as I a land on my heels, when I do this the anterior muscle pain goes away!

I think if I tried the all you can eat buffet and the pints, I would seriously vomit................! :-) think I will stick to the banana and lucozade sport until I can stomach anything else.

Thanks for the replies. So, nothing to get bothered about really, just carry on the good work. :-)
