Hi all. I am very keen to run the Derry marathon and had planned to enter as soon as I had heard about it. I assumed I had plenty of time but when I checked the website I had missed the initial entry by one day; I then didn't realise there would be a further tranche of places released and missed that too by one day! So am now very disappointed . Does anyone know of anyone who has a place they aren't using? I'll make sure its all above board with the organisers etc. (although I understand the race numbers have your name on so I'd have to run under someone else's name - not a problem for me ) Thanks in advance
Had a v. frustrating first six months to the training year (some minor injuries followed by a prolonged bout of ITB) which meant I had to give up my place at VLM and it was a rollover GFA place so lost for good... Finally ITB settled down and since July I have been training hard for the Dublin Marathon which is tomorrow. Text book prep up until last week (running about 50mpw, 5 long runs >20mi and plenty of speedwork). A couple of recent 10k times have been a bit disappointing but still I had expected to do a reasonable time at Dublin.
Then last Sunday I developed a very bad cold, really knocked me for six. Sore throat, sore head and chesty cough. I have only run once this week - 4 miles on Friday - and that was a struggle. I put off making a decision until this morning but have accepted now that although I feel a lot better I'm still coughing from my chest so running 26 miles tomorrow would be somewhat foolish. I'm absolutely gutted. Will obviously lose entrace fee plus hotel expense but actually it is all those 5am starts and killing myself doing 800m reps that are really rankling! I can't believe all that training is going to waste
So.. what do I do now?? I have scoured the marathon calendar for the next few months and there are very few races in the next 3-4 months and most would be very expensive for me to get to - I live in Ireland so not so many direct flights. However the Frankfurt marathon is next Sunday, is still accepting entries and my brother lives there so I'd have free accommodation plus three small nieces & nephews to come and cheer me on. Is it madness to think that, given I seem to be finally getting over the cold, I might manage a reasonable performance by then? If so, what sort of training should I try to do given that I have already been tapering (very sharply!) for the past two weeks? Any words of advice are welcome. Advance entry for the race closes this evening so I need to make my mind up today really.
Congratulations Nick & Kelly and welcome to baby Teya (gorgeous name!). Jarlath looking forward to perusing piccies of his future piratey missus... Actually to be honest he's not - he's more interested in his trike. Hmm wonder where he gets that from.
Glad I'm not too late... I'd like to second the nomination for Nutty Mum. She is more accurately my nutty mother-in-law , who thinks nothing of cycling 30 miles to come and babysit while I go out for a run - a running kindred spirit indeed! She puts so much into training herself and absolutely deserves, and would make the most of, this opportunity to work towards a GFA. Please, please, please pick her </grovel>
