i think it all depends on how good you are at pacing...something at which I am rubbish at....if i run with a watch and I am off my pace time I'm trying to achieve then I tend to panic speed up and then I'm totally spent!
i can only speak from a past experience and cant praise the pacer enough sub 1:30 and that's exactly what we did!.....I will admit beforehand I googled him ( haha) too see what he had been running at etc but they don't tend to be cart horses like my good self!!
in theory it's nice to think that we can start off slowly and crank up the speed towards the end but I have never done this !...by the 7 mile I'm in a comfortable pace but can go no quicker and just a case of hanging in there .. at least in a group you have company otherwise when it gets a bit tough it can be a lonely place not only physically but mentally.
I am running the cardiff half in two weeks and will be hoping to keep with the pacer but as already mentioned you are putting your faith in someone else's ability to run a time which I am happy todo so and strongly advocate but if you cant do that then goodluck go for it but on your own!
Inov8 all day long!! I deliberated for a long time before buying but finally bought one and use it regularly ,its lightweight ,very comfortable highly durable and as stated above has a internal bladder for your fluids if required. They have a few in their range so pick the size required on how much kit you need to carry! I have had mine for quite some time now and is still as new!
ran cardiff sunday just gone so hoping to just get round comfortably...never ran this before but a local so in answer to the ups think the worst is probably just outside pontypool park gates and then a gradual pull from the bottom of the londis shop hill in new inn which goes upto the masons public house then i think there is probably one or two more gradual gradients and then your home!!! goodluck to everyone lets hope for some dry weather!!!
running solo tomorrow so hope i can pace it right as sounds a nightmare all this downhill and then suffering the rest of the way because i've gone to fast!!!!
i can say having completed sundays race and now having time to reflect that i thought the 1.30 pacer was very very professional and did his job to the letter all be it 30 secs under which i am sure we all would rather be under the goal as appose too over having trotted around for 13.1 ish miles. i have only ran two half marathons and for this my training had been less than adequate and so after much dileberation beforehand decided that i would try and keep with the pacer. i found the race enjoyable as i was in a comfortable pace (until about 11 mile..lack of mileage training!!!) and as i have no garmin etc and use no watch i could relax in the knowledge that riel carol had the timings, pace worry all in hand!! all i had to do was put one foot in front of the other and concentrate on other matters like breathing etc etc. i am sure that without him i wouldnt of achieved my own goal of sub 1hr 30mins and for most of the race i felt strong and at times thought perhaps i should up the pace and go on.....lucky sense prevailed as i didnt because come the 11 mile i was spent but knew by then we had 30 secs in the bag and that if i could see him and grit it out i would hit target. had i gone on beforehand he would of definately passed me and by then i would be in the mentally and physically all defeated mode and probably added at least ten mins to my time.
i certaintly would use one again provided they were of the obviously exprienced riel carol calibre that i found out as we chatted on the way round !!!( 2 londons paced and a 3hr 7 min marathon a week ago and was disappointed!!) again thanks to him and well done you pacers. i can only comment for him but from what i have read its been all good.
just finished with a pb of just sub 1hr 30mins...followed riel carol the pacer for sub 1hr 30mins and he did exactly what it said "on the tin" a big thanks to him as never followed a pacer before and would highly recommend it ....i dropped off towards the end (last mile and half) but by then the hard work had been done. it was a bit tight in places and the cobbles werent nice but on the whole not bad!! well done everyone!!!
