I have got a deferred GFA place from 2009 and still in two minds whether to stick with the FIRST training plan that I used in 2008.
saying this, I beat my PB by over a minute to acheive 3:14 by using this plan in 2008 and this with trying to follow the Runners World 7 minute mile pacer who was doing more like 8 minute mile pace and who also disappeared into the lavs at mile 8 leaving a lot of us stranded and having to make the time up!! and on top of that my ITB went at just after half way!
I think with all that going on , the bottom line is that it must work and think i have to stick with it!!!
I have done two marathons now. The first one using a standard training program and achieved 3:15. I did the second this year using the Furmann FIRST program and achieved 3:14.Saying this I picked up an injury half way through, so would have definately taken another 2/3 mins off that.
The thing to remember is stick to the plan no matter how tempting it is to do a little extra and also make th most of the Xtraining days. I found a bike to be the best for these.
I am glad to hear about not needing trail shoes for TPU as I was going to waltz off and buy Salomons or Asics off road trail shoe! That 's what makes these forums so good!!
On the back pack front I was thinking of the Camel Back Octane XC which has a 2L bladder and a couple of large pockets on each hip, but was worriwed that this might not be enough and maybe have to go for a 10/12L capacity pack like the Inov8 12L for instance? As a matter of interest DTB how do you find the horizontal bladder on the Inov8?
I am doing my fist ultra marathon in January at the Thames Tow Path 50. I was wondring if anyone can make any recomendations for the best type of hydration back pack to use? the ones I have been looking at so far are a Camel back endurance which has a 2L bladder but not much pace for anything else right up to a raidlight 10L endurance back pack which also has a 2L bladder.
I am also looking for recomendations for the best type of show to use on the terrain. I am assuming that a trail shoe would be best and I have been looking at Salamons and Asics trail shoes?
