Thanks for the reply. I must admit I am not the best at stretching :-) but will look into doing some more.

Hi everyone. Apologies if this has been asked before but I cant find the search option anywhere!! Probably me being dumb.

Anyway my question is..

When I run 'fast' (for me that is) i.e 1 mile pace after about 5 mins I get a mildish pain in my lower back almost like its in one of my kidneys. This gets worse as I continue, never to the point of being painful enough to stop but should I be concerned or is this natural??

Thanks for any replies

I mentioned earlier about calibration of treadmills possibly being different.

I am doing 'base training' (see related thread) as advised by pantman and others and am running on a treadmill that is mt wifes and keeping HR down to 140.

On wifes treadmill I am running 11.2 mins per mile currently. I went to gym tonight and ran on a different treadmill and for same heart rate was doing 10.1 min miles - I havent improved that much!!

This could explain why people are faster or slower on treadmills - Calibration!!

Dont forget that all treadmills can be calibrated differently. Unless you use the same one each session are you sure you are comparing apples with apples?

Just to motivate you all I have been trying this for 3 weeks now on a treadmill using hrm so I can gather all the relevant data. My average run time for each week has increased from 5.0 to 5.18 and 5.30 mph each week. Still *very* slow but at least its an improvment. Today I had the urge to run faster and go above 145 bpm but resisted - must be getting stronger. Another positive is my mileage is up from erratic 6-10 miles to week to about 13 now. Anyone having doubts stick with it for a while - I intend too.
