Hi Folks. If you go to the Expo and see a big queue outside....this will be for local South African runners to pick their number up. Go into the expo to the right hand side of the queue and the International number pick-up is on the back right-hand wall. Make sure you pick-up your free course route tour pass there and buy a coach 'to the start line' ticket whilst at the Expo, if you have not planned another way to get to the start. If you did not order a Champion Timing Chip or do not have a South African registered one, you will also need to buy this at the Expo. Phew! Is there anything else? Hang on......oh yes.....have a wonderful race and a fantastic time on Sunday. Look out....there will be 90 odd of our 302 runners wearing the UK Union Jack Comrades vest on the course and 120 wearing our Green and Black T Shirts around town
Hi Folks. I ordered a few extra Comrades UK shirts and have the following sizes. Green & Black T-shirts (£20 inc postage): XS = 1, Small = 1, Medium = 3, Large = 7. Union Jack running vests £18 inc postage): XS = 3, Small = 2, Large = 2. Let me know if you would like one. First come first served Also have a small and medium 2013 running vest (same as 2013, except has 2013 uphill on the back in yellow = £8 (inc postage) + 3 medium blue 2013 T-shirts (£8 inc postage) for any collectors out there Many thanks, David (firstname.lastname@example.org)
We are getting close to the 1st June big event and here are a few things to have on your checklist J
Qualifying Times….must be registered on the www.comrades.com website by 6th May 2014. For UK runners, this can be from any marathon that has its results shown online
Visa....no visa is required for in date UK passport holders, staying up to 90 days. You will need 2 blank pages in the visa section of your passport
Flights...they can become more expensive nearer the event
Hotel...many UK & USA runners will stay at the Hilton Durban (next to the Expo & close to the finish line). Although there are still B&B & other hotel vacancies available. There will be around 80 UK runners in UK Comrades T-Shirts around town too. We have 302 registered runners from the UK
Expo....09:00 to 17:00, 29th to 31st May 2014. This is where you need to pick your numbers up from. If there is a long line of people queuing to get in, these will be local South Africans. Bypass them and head for the far right hand wall, where you will see the International registration area…and no long queues. Here, you will receive your race number and make sure you ask for your free tour of the route coach pass (you can choose to go on either the 30th May or 31st May route tour). This is a great thing to do, including the Comrades museum & a very special local school. Please be aware it is a 07:30 to 13:00 event and will be a bit tiring. Additional Zar250 (around £14) guest tickets can be purchased at the expo, subject to availability. You can also purchase a coach ticket to take you to the race start…all coach tickets are relatively inexpensive, This is a large running expo with lots of related stands. There is also a massage area and a great buzz!
Timing Chip…you will need to have a South African registered Champion Chip, in your name. If you have not ordered one with your entry, they will be for sale at the Expo. Think these are the equivalent of £13 or so
Other Route Tour Option….Complete Marathons offer the route tour with the legendary Bruce Fordyce giving commentary. Options are 08:00 to 12:00 or 13:00 to 17:00 on Friday, 30th May or 08:00 to 12:00 Saturday, 31st May. Cost is ZAR800 (around £45). Details are at http://www.completemarathons.co.za/route.html
Race Day….will start at 05:30 outside the Town Hall at Pietermaritzburg. Coach tickets from Durban to the start are available for purchase at the Durban expo
- It is likely to be in the 70-80 degrees F bracket during the race, so factor 50ish sun cream is a good idea for most of us Brits
- A Comrades cap is normally provided in the expo goody bag. You might want to wear this to protect your head from the heat
- Sunglasses are a must
- Many people carry a small water bottle for the first 10k and drop it after that to avoid the pushing and barging at the first few water stations, which get very busy
- There are plenty of water stations, Energade, Coke Cola, salted baked potatoes and endless crowd provided goodies during the race
- Remember to run with a smile. It is an amazing life experience J
Race Cut-Off Points & Times
Cato Ridge - N3 Subway 5:10 (10h40)
Drummond (Halfway) 6:10 (11h40)
Winston Park 8:30 (14h00)
St Johns Avenue 10:00 (15h30)
Sherwood 45th Cutting 11:20 (16h50)
You will need to be past these cut-off points prior to the times shown to be able to continue in the race
- There will be an ‘International tent’ at the finish where you can meet-up with your fellow runners J
After Party….Bruce Fordyce (Comrades Legend). This is aboard an old phantom ship at the aquarium, includes buffet food, soda drinks and entertainment as part of the ZAR1250 (around £70) entrance fee. Tickets can be booked at http://www.completemarathons.co.za/party.html
Media Release: Comrades Marathon Substitution Process opens
Comrades Marathon runners who were unable to enter the 2014 race during the official entry period (1 September – 30 November 2013) now have an opportunity to still be part of the world’s biggest and oldest ultra-marathon through the official 2014 Substitution process over the month of April.
The Comrades Marathon Association’s (CMA) Substitution Rule allows for a runner who has not entered to substitute an entrant who has withdrawn, or intends to withdraw from the 2014 edition of The Ultimate Human Race.
The Comrades Marathon Substitution Rule was introduced for the very first time in 2012 and now forms part of the CMA’s official race rules. The Substitution process officially opens on 1 April and closes on 30 April 2014.
The completed application forms as specified in the Substitution Rule must reach the CMA office by 30 April 2014. There will be no extension of this deadline.
Athletes still intending to submit Substitution application forms are advised to visit the official Comrades Marathon website at www.comrades.com for the downloadable forms and the comprehensive list of rules and regulations which govern the Substitution process.
Race Director Rowyn James says, ‘The Substitution Rule has been very well received by our runners over the past two years and will ensure that there is a higher number of starters outside the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on 1 June 2014.’
