If you're new to the UK, you won't know about Ordnance Survey maps, available in 1:50k and 1:25k scales, which show all places you are allowed to go (public rights of way), and you can learn to guess which ones are most suitable for you.
The 1:25k show field boundaries, so they are very much easier not to get lost with.
I have run around there only on the Eden Valley Walk, which you'll see follows a river if you go eastwards. Otherwise, don't go further than you can remember, and take a compass with you! Choose a day when you can see five miles to any church spires, pylons, windmills etc that might help you find out where you are.
It's a lovely part of the country, and at least in daylight, there's no need to run on roads.
