I think there is a possibilty of damage to a 16 year old as there is to a 40 year old. There is also a possible benefit to both. I think that the UK Athletics people are stuck in a time warp and are very rigid in their way of thinking. I'm not saying all 16 year olds should be running half marathons but maybe some should be able too. A big strapping fit 16 year old is more capable than an old 40 something with a dicky ticker.
They play for 90 minutes. Kids are out there all day. I think some 16 year olds would struggle but some would be fine. Exactly the same as anybody any other age. I don't think there is any confincing roof that it does any more harm than it does to any other age group.
I don't know why any kid would want to do a half marathon but I DO know one lad who is desperate to run a 10k or further at 10 years. In 7 years we may have lost him to some other sport or worse.
I was not too impressed by Eddie Izzard but when I saw the programme I could say why it wasn't impressive. Doing something badly with no preparation is not impressive. This guy Knows EXACTLY what he is doing and I think he is doing somethng amazing and really difficult. This guy is doing something I would find hard to do once....50 times.
