i started in may after 18mths out and a 10kg weight gain.
in retrospect i wish i'd put my ego to one side and used interval runs using the couch to 5k. unrealistic expectations brought on calf strains and meant it took longer to reach this distance with my own non-interval routine.
i did my first dark run yesterday evening on a trail and used a head torch, it worked out ok although it was almost full moon. expect your pace to drop.
i have a petzl tikka xp 2 and it has a diffuser that can be flipped down to create a wide beam which is more practical. i didn't feel self conciousness using it as it was pitch black when i started, but i might feel different if the run started in the light of dusk and finished in the dark.
about six weeks ago my calf went, enough to limp home but enable training a few days later. two weekends ago the calf went again, i iced, massaged and rested it and decided to train on a flatter circuit a few days later to minimise the stress. three sessions later i felt it go again and i'm not sure how long i should rest.
it feels like an acute pain when it first goes and its sore for 2 or 3 days, but then feels normal enough to continue running. if its a muscle tear that remains vulnerable during healing process, how should i manage my training?
