Looks like some nice times on here, as per usual. For me, sad to say it was a DNF. At one point I thought things would be fine, went through the half about 1:34... but by mile 17 I thought I was going to throw up and by mile 20 both quads were cramping so hard I could barely walk let alone run. Rather than enduring another hour of agony to get a 3:40+ I decided to hop on the DLR, and have no regrets. Actually surprised I made it that far. I'm never doing a marathon again unless I've done the proper mileage. Too bad I couldn't make the Red Lion - instead went to a reception for the charity that funds my research. Quite humbling to hear the stories of the people running, and felt like a bit of a plonker not raising any money with my GFA entry. |

Just a quick update from me... on March 2nd while running through Dulwich wood I managed to smash my foot on a concrete post (that I've run past dozens of times and know is there!) leading to 2 broken/severely bruised toes. After 2 weeks I decided I was healed enough, but I guess I was still limping a bit which caused me to pull my calf muscle on the other leg and I basically gave up on London. But then this week rolled around and the leg was feeling a lot better and I thought "what the hell - what's the worst that could happen?". I'm moving back to Canada at the end of this year, so this is essentially my last crack at VLM for a while and I'm giving it a go. MtR, looks like you're contemplating something similar! If I can run under 3:20 I'll be very impressed with myself.
Good luck to everyone who has properly trained, and maybe I'll see some of you at the GFA start.... |

Well, I got back from my Christmas holiday in Spain and saw a piece of paper stuck to my fridge telling me I'm meant to run the London Marathon. It caused me to think "God, I better start to do a bit of training", so that's what I've done. I've even managed a long run of 9 miles - wahoo! We'll see if I can manage to pull things together for a 2:59:59, although part of me is tempted to go for a half PB and take the tube to the finish line. Nevertheless, looking forward to another season of reading training advice and banter on here. |

Today's sad marathoning news got me back to this site today. As I read on letsrun, Sammy was 'pure balls'. Glad I got to see him for his '09 London win in person. I guess it's been over 4 weeks since my London debacle. As promised, I took 21 days off, and have eased back into it. 12 days in Italy made the time off a lot easier, and I gained back some needed weight with a lot of pizza, pasta gelato. No sign of my former injuries in the 3 runs I've done since I've been back, so I think I'll be able to keep up some decent fitness. Still not sure how hard I'm going to hit the training but hopefully I'll get in a few races from 5-21.1 k in the next few months.
PS - decided to simplify my screen name... and realized it shares initials with a certain 5000/10,000 superstar.
