Well, I'd try getting some neck massage if I were you.

A huge amount of headaches are caused by tension in the neck reducing blood supply.

My wife frequently gets probs like yours, and I have to give her a gentle 'cranial massage' which is essentially very short periods of gentle vertical lift to her skull. Its not difficult, but has to be done sensitively, so you could google it and try and get someone to try it out on you.

A quick question about he route ?

It says 75% tarmac (which puts me off as I usually run off-road) but is that right ? And what are the 'estate' roads like ? Are they more 'track' than road ?

regards, phil

I've just done my third ever halfy, I'm 53 and I never train - I run and mountain bike for pleasure on the south downs as and when I can, sometimes not doing anything for 3 or 4 weeks.

I can fairly happily run 15miles when I've been out regularly, but I only do what feels comfortable, and it's that state of mind you have to cultivate.

There is absolutely no doubt that, on the day, you will be able to do more than you have done before, as said above, just so long as ...

  • You dont run any distance for a week before the event. You dont even need to run at all in the week before - go out for a brisk walk if you feel you need to do something.
  • You make sure you sleep well - it's important.
  • You make sure you drink small amounts regularly for the hour before the race.
  • You use every drink station, and drink there, dont be tempted to try and run and drink from the plastic cups, it's a waste.
  • You must remember its supposed to be enjoyable, so if you're not enjoying the pace, slow down, or walk !

Also remember to keep drinking after the race, at least a half litre in the hour afterwards.

Have a good day !
