So anyway, I'm on the verge of signing up for the 2012 New York marathon. This will be the 2nd of the 5 Majors that I will be doing (following London last month).

Didn't get through on the ballot. So am wondering what is the best way (and cheapest) of going about it. And does anyone have hotel recommendations? Or any other advice?

Picklelilly - your 16 week training programme would have to start in May anyway. That's only next month. Doesn't sound like you have any chance to get out of shape.

IMO, you should cut down though, and then build back up slowly in conjunction with your training schedule. There's no sense (IMO) in doing advanced long-distance running every weekend for the next 4 months. Your body surely needs the rest.

Please note that I've not done a marathon before (VLM this month being my first), and so I've certainly not done 2 in any given year.

Good luck with both!

Thanks very much, FQ!  Am now in the ballot.  (I'm assuming I've got as much chance of winning the lottery, but you've got to be in it to win it!)

Any idea if the ballot is now shut?  Anyone have a link?

Hi all,

Well, the update is that I am still on Nebivolol 5mgs, which has brought my BP down to below 140/80.  However, I have also cut out processed meats and other high-salt foods (where possible), and this has further reduced my BP to about 125/75.

I never did get to do the Paris marathon last year, as I was unable to get a Dr note, and unwilling to "come up with one" myself.

I have, however, been given a guaranteed place in the VLM 2012, so I am now in training for that!

I'm not a fast runner, and I'm not looking for a great time.  My training will consist of one, ever-increasing weekend run until I get up to 20 miles in April.  I plan on doing the marathon in under 5 hours (the closer to 4 hours the better).
