I thought I would start a quick chat about GPS watches.
I always ran with a GPS watch until last september. I had a period of low training after my wife had a baby and tried to come back with the watch. I think concentrating on how fast I was running (and pushing too hard too soon) was causing injury. So I put the watch away with the intention of bringing it back out after Christmas.
I have enjoyed the break and this got me thinking do you really need the watch. If you increase the quantity of running and add some qaulity sessions based on percieved effort does it matter if this is measured? Do you need a gauge to tell you your heart rate surely perceived effort is just as good?
The result for me has been a recent 2 minute PB at Wilmslow Half Marathon 1:27:30. I am planning on continuing without the watch for the forseeable and and looking forward to how succesful this approach will be over 5k and 10k distances.
Other thoughts would be intersting. Do you train with garmin, to speed, to heart rate, to effort?
