Hi Gillian, yep, I do a lot of my running on the cycle paths. I'll give the lamp-post intervals a go.

Stig - no, no GPS on the polar just my maths ability I do use the run jog walk website too. I live in Edinburgh and do try to use a few of the hills here...not the same as the south downs though!!!

Ginger Plodder - that's brilliant info thanks...I'll give it a go. I know that the major part of my problem is getting my brain to accept a faster pace. So hard today watching everyone whiz past...

 Thanks both for your advice.

Thanks Stig,

I have a Polar HRM but all my runs seem to be between 160 - 170 and today was 180+...seems higher in the morning and thought that might be as I usually train at night...and always at 6mph whatever the rate!!! I have had a couple of long runs at 155ish but that's really unusual. Should I do a bit of interval/ lampost running? or maybe a bit of hills? there's a nice 100m hill quite near which might be useful.
