I've just joined a club. I'm a beginner & not a very fast one at that but it really doesn't matter!

With a club you get coaching & structured training sessions in groups according to ability, there social aspect is a big bonus if that's what you want &  of course reduced race entries. My club meet up 3/4 times a week at varying times/locations but you're not under any pressure to go to them all & there's nothing to stop you going out on your own with your ipod whenever you want.  Give it a go, if you don't like it, you don't have to join.

I go to a circuit training class once a week, last wednesday's one was quite tough & my abs are still really painful, to the point where standing up straight from sitting hurts quite badly. Unlike other times when I've over- worked my abs, this is quite a localised area, just  under my rib cage. I haven't been able to run since wednesday & it's bugging me. Any ideas how long this will take to go away?

p.s. I do the circuit class every week so I'm used to doing it & didn't feel anything untoward at the time

I got a lot of similar sorts of comments when i gave up smoking, one person even said to me that I was putting my body under more strain by giving up!   These days I get plenty of comments from people that I'm 'mad' for running & going to circuit classes, I just laugh at them & say yes, I probably am.

People don't like being forced into facing up to the fact that they probably could/should do more healthwise (but then couldn't we all, none of us are perfect)

they  criticise you as a form of self-justification. Rise above it, you KNOW you're looking after your body  & are healthier as a result.

What anyone else does/says is their problem, not yours

I got chased by a pack of pugs the other week (does three count as a pack??) There's nothing like a snarling pack of ankle biters to increase your speed!

That was a good thing you did there. Too much alcohol + too much sun could have equalled a very poorly Tent. Luckily, the Tent was ok but it may not have been so fortunate. You should give yourself a pat on the back
