Thanks to whoever it was who posted the Elevation chart earlier in the thread. I have just downloaded my data from the race and thought I would pop up an image of the Elevation output from my Garmin that people may find helpful in future years:
Edit: Doesn't seem to be displaying very well, anyone any ideas on how to improve it?
I should read the Newsletters better. Just gone over the previous one to today's and saw this:
"If I do not have medical aid, and I am taken to a private hospital, who pays? The CMA has arrangements with the two hospitals that for the first 24 hours for patients who do not have medical aid and are admitted will be treated free of charge, and thereafter you will be transported to a state facility. Patients who do have medical aid will be charged at normal rates."
Happy enough with that level of cover so won't bother with any extra cover bar my normal travel insurance. Though would be good to know of anyone who has managed to get cover for the race.
Cheers for the replies about the insurance guys. I had insurance that covered me for marathons but although this is called a marathon we all know it is an Ultra by all but name so I can't see any insurance company paying out for any medical treatment in relation to the actual race.
My insurance will cover me for the rest of the trip no problems as that will just be a holiday but I wouldn't mind having some cover for the actual race having heard the stories from my brother who was a doctor out there in the non private hospitals which is where I would guess you would end up without insurance.
Would be surprised if no company offered insurance as I would think you are less of a risk to them running this as opposed to a marathon as you aren't likely to be a fun runner running an Ultra, your more likely to be someone who is physically very fit.
Thanks for the info but unfortunately Global Travel Insurance said they wouldn't be able to provide cover.
They said that if you are going with a tour operator the tour operator is likely to have a special policy that they might do but as /i am going off my own back, i.e. booked accommodation and flights on my own they wouldn't be able to provide any cover and didn't know of any that would for an Ultra Marathon.
The search continues.....What do others do? Not bother with insurance? Or all going with tour operators?
I was wondering if any fellow UK runners doing the Comrades this year would be able to help me out.
I am looking for travel insurance that will cover me for the run itself and am struggling.
I use Direct Travel Insurance normally but when I have spoken to them they said they couldn't provide cover for the run itself as it was classed as an endurance race.
I have searched the forums and web to try and find a company but haven't found anything as of yet.
Can anyone point me towards a company that will provide cover?
