McHilly, I recommend running with cream on. I am pale and have to when I run in SA. The one year I didnt (the up run in 2011) I got badly burned on one side because the race is one direction and its always on your right hand side on the up ... I was burnt all down that side and on the inside of my left leg. Needless to say it was very sore.
Usually I cream up first thing and again just before I leave home/hotel and it stays on all day. If you feel yourself burning the locals are often giving it out on the side of the road.
a lot of the locals who know the route stop and see people at a variety of places along the route. I remember a couple dressed as Aussies that I must have seen at least 5 times last year. In some places there are off ramps from the new main road that are fairly close to the old main road (the Comrades route) and they use these. That is why there are always so many supporters near the bridges.
Police are strict on the actual national highway though.
Add me to the injured list ... . After MK which I ran really easy I had some pain in my ankle which I left for a week before doing an easy 30km taper on Saturday and my ankle is badly swollen. I think it might be tendonitis in the achilles so seeing a physio on Thursday. Onto the indoor bike for 3 weeks I think.
