Jonny – yes , like you I find the treadmill useful for interval sessions. In fact I tend to use it for interval sessions only when the evenings get lighter, which is when I do most of my running. They're obviously very good for maintaining target pace, although I've got injured a couple of times partly as a result of setting the target pace too high. I’ve joined a running club now, so I might do intervals on the track in future.
Strangely – Radcliffe seems like a well run club. They’ve certainly put on some good races recently. Just trying to poach you for Bolton Harriers, that's all! At our club they let you join on a trial membership for one month, which might be worth considering wherever you end up.
Jimbob –I lost about 14 pounds in weight 18 months ago and ran about 30 seconds quicker per mile without any additional training. So as CW has also suggested, this could make a significant difference, if you have any weight to lose that is! My BMI is about 21.5 and I reckon I could lose at least another stone. I’m going to get my body fat measured at some point though, see how much more I can realistically lose.
There’s some serious expertise on this forum! Anyone got any thoughts on treadmill running vs road / trail running? I did a lot of my training for VLM on the treadmill partly because I was worried about exacerbating a long term knee injury and the impact of road running.I ran a treadmill “PB” in 16:30 on the treadmill on zero incline but haven’t replicated that to date outside of the gym! Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to the long term beneficial or detrimental effects.
Re: core training. I saw a physio last year regarding an injury to my knee and was advised to do a lot of core work on my glutes, hips and abs as these were undeveloped compared to my hamstrings, quads and calves which were doing all the work as it were. I did quite a bit of work on them and I think it improved my abysmal running style and maybe helped to reduce risk of injury. Can't stand having to do the exercises though.
Wardi – thanks. May look in to Frankfurt. Amsterdam is also a possibility. I really wanted to do Berlin, though, as I've heard they have some really nice vegan cafes there... but I don’t think they let you transfer places.
Thanks CW (again!). Looking forward to Portaloo luxury next year. It was the thought of that that spurred me on. Go easy on that shin!
Cheers LS21 and Andy D. I paced my nephew to a parkrun PB on Sunday. My first run since London and I had niggles everywhere! Going to take at least a few more days off now.
Great running TB and jonny.
YD - I did quite a bit of juggling around with P&D sessions this year in order to accommodate local races. I don’t think it did my marathon training any particular harm, but it probably affected my times in the local races as I was doing my Sunday long run on Wednesday or Thursday evening instead.
SB - Your best years are all ahead of you! Sure you don’t fancy joing Bolton Harriers instead though?
RP - great PB!
JD11 - I ran a 2:57 marathon last year on the back of a 1:25 half five weeks beforehand. So sub 3 is definitely doable if you get the long runs in as others have said.
