Me and a friend are going to sign up to this event on 11 May 2013, at Burghley House. Its a 20 mile obstacle course (supposedly on a par with tough mudder). Is anyone doing this or ever done anything similar?
OK..... so i'm new to this running lark!! Bit of background, i'm 22 years old, pretty skinny and haven't really done any running since i left school.
I went to sports direct and bought some cheap running trainers for £30, put some shorts on and went for a "run" which turned into more of a walk!! This was just around about a year ago now. It is very disheartening when you realise that your fitness is so poor so i pretty much put the trainers away and forgot all about it!!
Into 2011 i joined my gym, which has an athletics track outside and i started setting myself little goals. I then decided i would like to join the Army so i incorporated my training into that. With many stops and starts i started completing the required 1.5 mile run on a regular basis, not always in under 14 minutes but i was getting there!!
I decided that i should start running longer distances then 1.5 miles would seem like nothing. Fast forward to August this year (2011) i attended Army Selection in Lichfield (2 day course assessing candidates for fitness and mental ability and teamwork etc.) and smashed my 1.5 mile run by completing it in 9:20!! Overall passing out with a grade B.
Running has given me a new lease of life, it is now a hobbie of mine, and i'm looking to do a 10km in early new year and then maybe a half marathon in Spring.
Morale of the story is = DON'T GIVE UP!! It will come in time, just keep training!
Would be interested to hear of anybody else who is in the forces and there stories with regards to running and fitness.......
