I think a trip to the running shop to look at socks is on the cards for me. I also think it might be the way I am running, I think I have funny shape toes and they rub together!! I am going to sign up for Cardiff so there is plenty of time for me to try different things. Thanks for the ideas, going to try all these out. I wont give up the running as Sunday was one of my proudest days!!

I feel your pain. I ran my first half on sunday (Reading Half Marathon) and managed to come away with no injuries apart from some lovely blisters on both my big toes and the loss of 2 toe nails which is causing me so much pain at the moment, especially wearing shoes I have had my trainers looked at and wearing the right ones for me and the right size. Now I need to look at my socks and will look at how I lace up my shoes. I really want to carry on with running and already want to sign up for another half marathon but need to get my toes sorted out!

Matt and Barney... make that 3 people struggling! I have a groin strain that seems to be getting worse

This is the first half marathon and I am really looking forward to it, or should I say I was until this has happened - got to say reading this thread has given some of the excitment back!

I am up to 8.5miles and hoping to do 10miles on sunday (I am running the Plymouth Sport Relief 6mile on sunday and then run home to add the 4miles) but not quite sure if I am going push it and just rest up and pray to god I get around Reading next week!

Think I am gonna take it slow and gental (sorry if I am one of thoes in the wrong time pen but when I was fit and healthy I probably would have been fine!)

Good Luck everyone and if you see me being wheeled around then give me a wave!!! lol!

I am sorry if this has already been covered but  I can't go through all the threads and the silly search thing isn't working for me!

I started running around october last year and I am signed up for the Reading Half marathon, I am just about to venture up to 6 miles this week and so far its going ok.... there are just a couple of things that are annoying me and any advise would be great!!

I have been reading on here loads about when you run for around an hour and over you should start to think about having some jelly babies or something like that or an energy drink - well last week I went out thought I'd give this a go (again like alot of people suggested before your race)... well it all went wrong! I felt like it took all my energy just to chew and swallow the stupid thing so ended up spitting it out. Today I have only done 2 mile quick run but thought I would try taking a drink to start getting used to carrying something - well that was no good either - I can't run and drink as again it just takes all my energy. Plus the stupid bottle was doing my head in having to carry that!

Another thing I am struggling with is coughing... when I stop running and for about an hour after I have a massive coughing fit, It feels like I can't get any air to my lungs and that I have rubbish on my chest that I am trying to cough up. I have suffered with a cough for the last month but thats just a normal tickle cough and nothing on my chest.

Any help on these two would be great

Have you thought of joining a running club? I really struggled getting out last week after Christmas and decided it was cause I was going on my own. I emailed my local club then went along on the thursday and really enjoyed it. Just talking to people who enjoy running was great but they are showing me different routes which will mix my running up abit (plus the social side seems good too!). I am going again tomorrow and cause I don't want to be the last one its given me that push to keep getting out in between and keep going.

Like the others said I think you should do your run, if you don't you might be even more gutted! Hope you get your bug back soon
