I am lucky enough to have met Bill on a few occasions and chatted with him at races. He always had an encouraging word no matter how poorly i was running.

His book 'studmarks on the summits' is an inspiration to all fell runners and his knowledge of fell running is second to none.

He was recently elected an honorary member at his club Clayton Le Moors in recognition of his outstanding service to the club and to fell running in general.

He was an outstanding gentleman and will be greatly missed.

RIP Bill

I've got a running map for Shanghai, kindly provided by one of the hotels I stayed in. It takes you around one of the biggest parks in Shanghai. I'll send it  to you.

But a word of warning, the standard of driving in China is like nothing you will have ever witnessed before, it defies belief. So be careful. I have given up trying to run outside in Shanghai for fear of my life and make do with the hotel gyms.

I've got my PPL. Did it all as an intensive course but it was a bit different for me.

I got sponsorship from the Royal Navy when I was 17 and thinking of joing them as a pilot. After a load of tests I was awarded 40 hrs flying tuition. The condition of it was you had to reach PPL standard by the time you had done 30 hours. It was a two week intensive course but It worked really well for me.

Expensive now though to keep it up.

I was talking to Jon after a recent race. He is a class act and a thoroughly decent bloke. He only wants to do his best for the sport. I can't believe we are stupid enough to let a person like this slip through our fingers.

He's still got the talent and still got the desire. I can't blame him for going somewhere that respect this. Good luck to him I say.
