I think I have chondromalacia patella but I am not sure - I have been to various knee clinics physios etc that can find nothing wrong with my knee its been ongoing for a very long time and I've only recently in the last 18 months taken up running here is the very long time line of events
2003 - 2006 job carpet fitting - very active regularly going to gym - knee pains started after a run on treadmill in around 2005 with some swelling below the knee cap.
2006 went to see physio who examined knee and stated although the patella tendon was slightly wider on the injured knee didn't give a diagnosis just claimed something about micro tears possibly occuring? Sold me insoles which I wore religiously for 2 years with no improvement.
2006 Went to GP who advised to seek an alternative job diagnosed with bursitis of the knee.
2006 changed job from carpet fitting became less active due to chronic pain in knee.
pain continued until late 2012 for 6 years up until then I played/took part in no sports but the pain has always been there.......
Late 2012 I started running again did a couple of half marathon distances and I still run to this day.
2013 Went to see another physio again full examination done. Again I was looked at as if I was faking some sort of injury just so I could hand over my money. Was given a handful of exercises to do which have not helped.
After this final appointment I spent hours upon hours reading online and thats how I have come to the conclusion of chondromalacia patella.
Not made worse by running as far as I can tell
helped by anti inflammatories
Much much worse when sat down with knees bent
Releaved when I straighten my legs
Slight popping sound from the knee when I extend from bent knees to straight.
Its worth adding I spained my ankle twice in succession when I was around 16 (I'm 29 now) following the 2nd sprain my ankle was immobilised and didn't heal correctly therefore it now clicks with every step I take I am unsure whether this is unstablishing my whole leg and leading to my knee not tracking correctly?
Finally I was wondering if I rested as I did for 6 years would the symptoms of Chondromalacia continue? Also the long term prognosis if I continue to run and don't get this sorted if it is chondromalacia will me cartliges be shot?
Any help advice on treatment would be great I'm at my wits end
I probably will do just the last physio I went to at a knee clinic made me feel like I was wasting their time an also made me feel quite stupid for claiming there was something wrong with my knee despite the fact they could find nothing.
