Welcome to Adam and Camberwell. Glad to hear that training is taking over everyone else's life too!
Been a bit grumpy since hurting my lower leg last week but after much foam roller-ing and self massage and all the rest did 4 miles this evening with barely a twinge. Happy days again and looking forward to getting back on track
Here's to some warmer weather sooooon ... Hey Stilts. I'm going to get a roller to ease soreness and hopefully prevent injury. What roller do you use? I'm thinking to get the Trigger Point roller because I like the sound of the ridges and bumps, but it's a bit expensive compared to the standard foam ones: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Trigger-Point-Therapy-Roller-Orange/dp/B003HSJ5A8/ref=sr_1_2?s=sports&ie=UTF8&qid=1360345316&sr=1-2 Got any recommendations? First real big run tomorrow (well for me anyway). Hoping to do 10 miles, insha-Allah! Looking to do it in 1hr 40mins, let's see how it goes. |

Hi, guys! All the running and cold water training paid off. I successfully completed this year's Tough Guy race, in 3hrs 39mins, ending up in position 2708 out of 3650 finishers. I know that puts me in the third quarter of finishers and I didn't quite rip it to shreds as promised but TG and I have a mutual respect for each other now, I think, and I'm happy with that.

Hi, guys. Similar boat to you guys and think I've made a bloody big mistake. Signed up for VLM in April and IM 70.3 Wimbleball in June. Never done more than 10 miles running in one session in my life let alone run a marathon. Never done a triathlon either and I don't think I've swum more than 1km in a pool session before. And I don't have a triathlon bike, nor can I afford one. How serious are Ironman 70.3s? Training for the Marathon has started and I just completed the Tough Guy UK race yesterday. I'm a determined sort of bloke (or so I like to believe) but I'm nowhere near what you could consider a semi-professional athlete, let alone professional one. I just signed up for the 70.3 on the spur of the moment. Kind of like when people get drunk and take stupid bets on. Except I'm Muslim and don't drink and don't gamble, so I have no excuse. *facepalm* What should I do other than give up? I'm focusing my training on the VLM and intend to increase my swimming and cycling after completing that. Aiming for about 4.30 - 5 hour finish. My VLM training plan includes running on 3 days of the week (with a rest day between each running day) cycling on 6 days of the week (I cycle to work ) one session of boxing and one very short session of swimming. Sunday is my rest day. After VLM, I aim to reduce the running to 2 days and increase swimming to twice a week. I'm not really concerned about my cycling other than what bike to use. Any advice? Again, I can't afford a triathlon or TT bike. |

Hey Stilts! Woah, 15 miles is er... miles from where I'm at at the moment. From the training plans I've looked it seems that if you do a big LSR (e.g. half-marathon and above) the following week you take it easy and drop a good few miles.
It's snowing where I am, gonna get on my bike and cycle to that pond. If I survive the plunge,insha-Allah, I'll tell you how I feel about not being able to sire any children. :S |

Today's workout was SICK! After visiting dad at hospital and making sure he was fed, I cycled about 2 miles to Highgate Ponds only to find I was too late to swim. Not to be undone, I cycled approximately another 2 miles to Regents Park running track, did a little warm up, stretched and then ran the whole of the Outer Circle (just under 4 miles). Sofaboy, you'll be pleased to know I alternated between running on the road (facing traffic) and on both left and right hand side of the pavement. Next time, I'll go in the opposite direction. After completing the circle, gulped down some some sports drink and ran up and down Primrose Hill a couple of times stopping nicely at 5.2 miles in the outdoor gym at the bottom of the hill. Feeling a bit bored of running at this point (and conscious of missing the cold swim I'd planned) I took my top off (actually, took all of them off as it was dark and the two other blokes weren't paying any attention to me), scrubbed myself down properly with snow (I checked it wasn't yellow... or brown for that matter!) then did a high intensity core workout for about 10 minutes, constantly scrubbing with snow. Got dressed, carried on running to complete 6 miles, did my cool down stretches then cycled 2 miles home. Finally, at home, I had a 10 minute cold shower to aid recovery and build tolerance for next week's Tough Guy challenge. I'm going to rip this Tough Guy event to shreds, insha-Allah! Now, to snuggle down with some tea and cake and my teddy. |
