The 1908 marathon was extended at each end of the course. The start was moved back to be in front of the window of the nursery at Windsor Castle so that the royal children could watch and the finish was moved to opposite the royal box in the stadium - hence 26 miles 385 yards.
PS. The royal box is not the one Prince Charles wears when playing polo!
